Geographic Location
Liaoyuan, named after its location at the headwaters of the Dongliao River. It is located in the hinterland of Northeast China, in the south-central part of Jilin Province, and is an integral part of the central city cluster of Jilin Province. The geographical coordinates are 124°56′- 125°50′ east longitude and 42°18′-43°15′ north latitude. It is a transition zone between the remaining veins of Changbai Mountain and Songliao Plain, and belongs to the low mountainous and hilly area, with an average elevation of 250-400 meters, and a geographic overview of "five mountains, one water and four fields". Liaoyuan is on the axis of the development of the center city of Northeast China. It is 100 kilometers away from Changchun, 200 kilometers away from Shenyang, 300 kilometers away from Harbin and 500 kilometers away from Dalian Port. The surrounding area is adjacent to Siping City, Jilin City, Meihekou City and Xifeng County of Liaoning Province respectively.
History
Liaoyuan City has a long history, as early as the Qing Dynasty in China, Liaoyuan was the royal "Shengjing" paddock. In 1902, the county system was established and named "Xi'an". In 1952, the city was renamed Liaoyuan City based on the fact that the Dongliao River originated in the city, and was upgraded to a regional-level city in 1983.
