Main Plot
The story takes place in Twin Peaks, a small town in the U.S. near the Canadian border, a peaceful and quiet escape from the world, where the body of Laura Palmer, the high school homecoming queen, is accidentally found raped and murdered to death. On the same day, another teenage girl is found in the town's woods, hospitalized and refusing to talk.
The small town of Twin Peaks has no official police department and the sheriff is not equipped to solve such a murder, so the FBI sends agents to support the investigation. On the 2nd night of his arrival in Twin Peaks, Cooper finds himself in the mysterious Red Room in a dream, where the dead Laura and the midget from another town leave him with the name of the murderer, but upon awakening from the dream, Cooper is unable to recall the name.
Laura is not as simple as an innocent student queen; she secretly prostitutes herself at the town's secret hostel, maintains sexual relationships with many of the town's people, and colludes with Reno, a drug dealer on the Canadian border, all while secretly dating her classmate, James, with her best friend, Donna, keeping their secret.
The town's biggest industry is lumber, and Josie Packard, the Chinese-American widow of the lumberyard owner, is trying to get out of her financial difficulties by getting involved with Ben Horn, the richest man in town. Josie also seduces the town's sheriff, Sheriff Harry, and she doesn't realize that Ben is secretly cooking up a fake account with her sister-in-law, Kathryn Packard, to make it look as if the lumberyard is going out of business.
Catherine bites Josie for murdering her own husband and plans to take the mill back from Josie, while Ben profits between the two men's battles. After Laura's death, Donna and James tie up their efforts to find the killer, and gradually the two become lovers. They go to Laura's psychiatrist Dr. Jacoby's house with Laura's cousin Madeleine to look for medical records.
Laura's archenemy Audrey goes undercover at Laura's brothel to find the killer, not realizing that the brothel is run by her own father, Horn. As night falls on Day 7, Cooper is shot at the motel where he is staying, leaving a mysterious loose end to Season 1, as Season 2 goes even further in its quest to discover the secrets of Twin Peaks.
