Choice of incision for jaw angle osteotomy

Extra-oral incision: it is a 3-5 cm incision at the angle of the jaw to remove the jaw angle. Advantages: the surgery is performed under direct vision, which is safer; it does not require complicated equipment and instruments, and the chewing muscle can be partially cut away at the same time.

Behind-the-ear incision: a 3-4 cm incision is made behind the ear to remove the jaw angle. Advantages: the incision is relatively hidden and the operation is relatively simple.

Submaxillary micro-incision: it is the application of a combined incision inside and outside the mouth inserted into the chainsaw of 0.5 cm to 0.8 cm tiny incision to complete all the surgical procedures, the incision in the lower part of the jaw, the incision will be inconspicuous after 3 to 6 months. Advantages: This method has no incision inside the mouth, so the surgery is less traumatic and postoperative recovery is faster.

Internal and external combined incision: applying a 3 cm to 4 cm incision inside the mouth and two 0.5 cm to 0.8 cm sized incisions under the lower jaw, it is very convenient to remove the hypertrophied jaw angle, and at the same time, it is possible to resect or grind the outer plate of the mandible and the jaw margin, and remove part of the biting muscle. Advantages: The surgery is very convenient and many beginners use this method. The micro-incision under the jaw will be inconspicuous after a period of recovery.

Complete intraoral incision: it is the best surgical method at present. It is the application of intraoral 3 cm to 4 cm incision arc amputation of hypertrophic mandibular angle, at the same time can be removed or grinding mandibular bone outer plate and mandibular edge, can be removed part of the biting muscle. Advantages: Because the entire surgery is only an intraoral incision, there will not be any surgical scars left on the surface of the body, and the surgical trauma is much smaller than the combined intra-oral and extra-oral incisions, and the recovery is also significantly faster. Also because of the intraoral approach, the chance of damaging facial blood vessels and nerves is avoided. The surgery is technically more demanding.
