Is brain death a vegetative state?
Most people first stop breathing and heartbeat at the end of life, but about 5% people first have irreversible organic damage to the whole brain, including the brain stem, which is brain death. Many people confuse brain death with vegetative state. Actually this is a misunderstanding. Vegetation and brain death are two completely different concepts. The vegetative brain stem function is normal and there are brain wave activities. Coma is because the cerebral cortex is seriously damaged or in a state of sudden inhibition, so the patient can have spontaneous breathing, heartbeat and brain stem reaction, can breathe and sleep spontaneously, feed him something, and he can digest; A few patients may wake up once. The brain of brain-dead people shows organic damage, without spontaneous breathing, the brain stem reaction disappears, and the brain wave is a straight line, even the nervous system and human instinctive reaction are gone. Transcranial Doppler ultrasound showed brain death, irreversibility and no possibility of resuscitation. Of course, many brain-dead people have many characteristics similar to "vegetative", because with the help of advanced medical equipment and technology, brain-dead people can keep breathing and heartbeat for a long time and get rid of waste in their bodies. But this does not mean that the brain-dead are still alive, nor does it mean that there is hope of resurrection.
