Taiyuan University of Technology was founded in 1954. Its predecessor, North China Fifth Industrial School, was a national key middle school established to meet the needs of national defense construction during the First Five-Year Plan period. The school was upgraded from 1988 to a junior college, and began to recruit undergraduates from 1999. In March 2007, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, it was independently set up as a full-time ordinary undergraduate school and renamed as "Taiyuan University of Technology". After more than 60 years of development, the school has developed into an application-oriented undergraduate school with engineering, science, economics, management, literature, law, art and teaching as the mainstay, supported by multiple disciplines and coordinated development.

The discipline of materials science and engineering has been listed as a provincial key supporting discipline, the specialty of applied chemistry has been approved as an "undergraduate teaching project", and the first batch of comprehensive reform pilot majors in local universities of the Ministry of Education, and five majors, including polymer materials and engineering, have been rated as provincial majors. Three courses, such as computer graphics, were rated as provincial-level high-quality resources * * * enjoyment courses; There are 6 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, 2 provincial virtual simulation experimental teaching centers, 1 provincial talent training mode innovation experimental area, 1 provincial excellent teaching team.
