Banan District is the main city of Chongqing, one of the metropolitan areas of Chongqing, in the southwestern part of the city, bordering Fuling and Nanchuan in the east, Qijiang in the south, Jiangjin, Jiulongpo and Dadukou in the west, and Nanan, Jiangbei, Yubei and Changshou in the north.

Banan District was formerly known as the historical county of Ba Xian, where the Ba people established their capital during the Shang Dynasty, and was established in December 1994 as a district.

Banan District has 8 streets and 14 towns under its jurisdiction as of the end of 2013, with a total area of 1834.23k㎡.In 2010, the resident population of Banan District was 918,692.
