Building StoryIn China, the earliest city to open the telegraph business to the public is Shanghai. 1869, the Danish Great Northern Telegraph Company by the Danish-Norwegian British Telegraph Company, Danish-Russian Telegraph Company and the Norwegian-British Telegraph Company, a joint venture of three, with the head office located in the Danish capital of Copenhagen. 1871, the Great Northern Telegraph Company successfully laid a submarine cable from Hong Kong through the Yangtze River estuary of the JI Mountain Island to Shanghai, Nagasaki, Japan. The Great Northern Telegraph Company successfully laid a submarine cable from Hong Kong to Shanghai and Nagasaki, Japan via Tai Ji Shan Island at the mouth of the Yangtze River, and formally opened its telegraph business on the Bund on April 18th of that year.
1947 Shanghai line number road atlas along with the introduction of foreign telegraph technology, the Chinese people gradually realized the importance of telegraph communication, including Li Hongzhang as the head of the foreign affairs faction. 1880 September 16, he wrote "please set up the north and south of the ocean telegraph piece," and two days later the Qing government approved. 1881 December, he wrote "please set up the north and south of the ocean telegraph piece" to submit, and two days later the Qing government approved. On December 28, 1881, the 1,500-kilometer-long Jinhu Telegraph Line was officially opened and opened for business. This was the earliest self-built and operated public telegraph circuit in China, the beginning of Shanghai's self-organized telecommunication industry, and the beginning of the Chinese people's sovereignty over telecommunication on their own land. From then on, China's telegraph business began to enter a new period of vigorous development.
In the early 20th century, with the expansion of its business, the Great Northern Telegraph Company's original rented office space at No. 7 on the Bund was insufficient, so in 1918, it spent 218,000 taels of silver to buy the land at No. 4, Aidoya Road (now No. 34, East Yan'an Road), in preparation for the construction of a new telegraph business building of its own. At that time, the telegraph industry was still a relatively new product in the world, so the Great Northern Telegraph Company chose the avant-garde spirit of the old firm Xinruihe to design and build the building.
After the building was completed, in addition to the company's own use, some floors were leased to the British Great Eastern Telegraph Company and the American Pacific Telegraph Company, making the building a true "telegraph office building. ***After the founding of the Republic of China, the three telegraph companies moved abroad one after another, and the Shanghai Municipal Urban Transportation Administration, the Shanghai Municipal Public Utilities Bureau, the Shanghai Red Cross and other governmental agencies moved into the building. After entering the 21st century, in order to better protect this excellent historical building and tell the complete history of the development of Shanghai's telecommunication industry, China Telecom Shanghai converted the 1st to 4th floors of the building into the Shanghai Telecommunication Museum, which was officially opened on June 23rd, 2010.
