The concept of "five moments" of hand hygiene covers all kinds of activities and places that need hand hygiene in medical services (there is no detailed list). It does not define one or more processes and nursing places, but pays more attention to the moment when hand hygiene is needed in the process of diagnosis and treatment.
This concept has not reduced the need for hand hygiene. It is a tool to identify when hand hygiene is necessary, and it is also a tool to distinguish when hand hygiene is useless.
Five elements of hand hygiene that should be paid attention to in practical application
For patients, the medical environment can be divided into two basic geographical areas: patient area and medical area.
"Patient area" includes the patient and some surfaces and articles temporarily belonging to him/her, such as bedside pager, bedside table, bed sheets, infusion tubes and other medical equipment.
"Medical area" is equivalent to all surfaces in the medical environment except the patient area, such as other patients and their patient areas and the wider medical environment.
