An earthquake with a magnitude of about 7.8 occurred at 02:18 on Nov. 13 near the border area between Iran and Iraq (34.83 degrees north latitude, 45.72 degrees east longitude). The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.2, according to the U.S. Geological Survey's Earthquake Information Network news.
Foreign media have just quoted Iranian officials as saying that the quake has killed 328 people and injured 1,700.
Iran's semi-official news agency, Fars News Agency, quoted the head of Iran's emergency services as saying that at least 1,000 people were injured in the quake.
Previously, a Fox News update said Iranian officials said the quake left at least 67 dead and 500 injured.
BAGHDAD, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- A 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck northern Iraq on Nov. 12, according to the U.S. Geological Survey Earthquake Information Network.
The news said the 7.2-magnitude quake struck 32 kilometers southwest of Halebjerg in northern Iraq at 2:18 p.m. Beijing time on Nov. 13 at a depth of 33.9 kilometers.
Iraqi state television reported that the capital Baghdad and Iraqi provinces, Kuwait and western Iran have strong tremors, a large number of people took to the streets to avoid.
People in several Iraqi provinces told reporters that the tremor was strongly felt.
According to Iraqi media reports, a powerful earthquake in the northern Iraqi province of Sulaymaniyah on the night of 12 December local time has killed at least four people and injured hundreds more.
The media in Iraq's autonomous Kurdish region, Ludo News Network, citing local officials, reported that four people were killed in the quake in the town of Darbandi Khan, which is close to the epicenter of the quake, and dozens of others were sent to nearby hospitals to be treated for their injuries.
The Joint Crisis Coordination Center of the Iraqi Kurdish Autonomous Regional Government tweeted that more than 500 people had been injured by the quake. Local hospitals in Sulaymaniyah are in urgent need of medical personnel, medical equipment and medicines to treat injured people.
Sources at a hospital in Iraq's northern Kirkuk province told Xinhua that about 65 local people were injured in the quake, and most of the injured have left the hospital after receiving treatment.
Officials in Iraq's eastern province of Diyala told the media that hospitals in Diyala have now received about 140 people injured in the quake, most of whom are elderly.
