Visits to prisons include six kinds:
(1). Visiting relatives and friends serving sentences in prisons
(2). Visiting a relative or friend serving a sentence in a detention center
(3). Visiting a relative or friend in a re-education through labor facility
(4). Visiting relatives or friends under administrative detention in an administrative detention center
(5). Visiting relatives or friends detained in detention centers
(6). Visiting relatives and friends in compulsory drug rehabilitation centers
Requirements for visiting prisons vary from place to place. The following conditions must be met in order to visit a prison:
I. Subject conditions. In accordance with article 48 of the Prisons Law of the People's Republic of China*** and the State, only relatives and guardians of criminals can exercise the right to visit prisons. However, it is now common practice throughout the country that friends of criminals can also conduct prison visits, because prison visits can bring corresponding economic benefits to the prison.
Two, the conditions of the documents. The prisons require the following documents to be presented at the time of the visit: 1. Identity documents (including ID card, temporary ID card, household register, household registration certificate, military officer's card, soldier's card, etc.), 2. Relevant certificates issued by the local street office, neighborhood committee, village committee. It is now common practice that the 2nd type of certificate is not required.
III. Time conditions. This condition stipulates that only the prescribed visiting days, can visit the prison. However, it is now common practice that visitation is permitted at all times except on statutory holidays.
Remember to bring money. There may be two places to use it.
1 is the visitation fee.
2 is food ah, cigarettes and so on, if it is sold in the small store outside the detention center (I guess it is fixed), you will be asked to buy it there.
Note: general time is limited, a lot of queuing, talking is to shout through the glass, not allowed to bring a cell phone in. It is best to have a lawyer to accompany you.
