Part 1: Reasons Why Malaysia Attracts Migrants
Since the launch of Malaysia's Second Home program in 2002, 20,000 foreigners have migrated overseas to experience the sunny lifestyle of Malaysia's "Retirement Paradise". The country is well suited for foreign nationals to reside in for long periods of time and offers incentives such as 10-year visas to actively encourage foreign migrants to move to the country.
Malaysia is by nature a very inclusive country, so foreigners are very welcome, not only by the government, but also by the locals. There are a number of incentive programs to try and move more people to Malaysia, such as allowing British expats to import cars or buy new cars in Malaysia without paying taxes or duties. Malaysia does set a minimum investment level, requiring foreigners to deposit a certain amount of currency in their home bank accounts in order to stay in the country. However, you can get other visas without much investment.
There are many sources that say that Malaysia is the best country in Southeast Asia for expats to live in. People are usually attracted to Malaysian expats because of their relatively low cost of living, tropical climate and exciting and fast growing new cities. You'll find most expats in Kuala Lumpur, followed by the other big cities in Malaysia, as all the international schools are based here.
Stunning picturesque landscapes, a wide variety of scenery and exquisite beaches make Malaysia an incredibly attractive place to want to buy a home. As Malaysia now has a large expatriate population, many programs have been set up, such as expat clubs, which will help new families to integrate into the community. This can also help people meet others in similar positions early on so they can ask questions and get support during their first few months abroad.
There are a significant number of international secondary schools that teach in English. These are perfect for families with older children moving to Malaysia. Most elementary school choose to teach in Malay, but there are a number of English-speaking nurseries and elementary school in and around Kuala Lumpur that are popular with expat parents.
As English is widely taught and used as a business language in Malaysia, there will always be a need for native English speaking teachers. If you have a teaching qualification in anything from a TEFL course to a PGCE, you won't find it difficult to find work in the big cities. If you don't have a qualification, it will be slightly more difficult, but you can still find private clients who want to improve their English on a one-to-one basis.
