Are dentures fixed or movable?

The first is removable partial denture. In fact, one of the most commonly used methods in dentition defect repair. In addition to a wide range of applications, it also has some problems, such as less grinding of tooth tissue, convenient washing and cleaning for patients to maintain good oral hygiene, simple manufacturing method, low cost, and the need to rebuild the original denture if the denture base is damaged or dentures are added.

However, compared with fixed dentures, removable partial dentures have the disadvantages of large volume and many parts. When wearing it for the first time, patients often feel foreign body sensation, which sometimes affects pronunciation and even causes nausea. Their stability and chewing efficiency are not as good as fixed dentures. In severe cases, it will lead to abutment injury, mucosal ulcer, plaque formation and tartar accumulation, dental caries and periodontitis, accelerated alveolar ridge absorption, temporomandibular joint diseases and other adverse consequences.

Then the fixed denture. In fact, the advantages of fixed denture are:

First, it has good retention and stability. During masticatory exercise, the fixed bridge prosthesis and abutment form a new functional whole, and the denture is stable without displacement, well supported and with high masticatory efficiency.

Secondly, the supporting function is good, and the resultant force borne by the fixed bridge is almost entirely borne by the abutment and the periodontal supporting tissue under it, with great supporting force, and its resultant force transmission mode is similar to that of natural teeth;

Thirdly, the denture is similar in size to the original natural tooth, with tight edges, comfortable for patients, no obvious foreign body sensation, easy to adapt, convenient to use and no need for patients to take it off;

Fourth, the denture has little dysfunction on the tongue, does not affect the patient's pronunciation function, and does not cause symptoms such as nausea;

Fifth, the color of fixed denture is close to natural teeth, which conforms to aesthetic standards.

However, fixed dentures also have disadvantages, that is, the scope of application is narrower than that of removable dentures, so it is not always possible to choose fixed repair, and the bonded fixed bridge is not easy to repair. The most important thing is that there are relatively many abutment tissues cut by fixed restoration.

In short, active repair and fixed repair have their own advantages and disadvantages.
