Baikouen arrived at the Jinchaji front at a difficult time in China's war against Japan. Under the military attack and economic blockade by the Japanese and pseudo-army, the Eighth Route Army fighters could only feed their horses with fodder, and Baek Choo-ng once ate potatoes for dinner, so the degree of hardship could be imagined! When he was hired by Nie Rongzhen as a health adviser in the Jinchahi Military Region, Mao Zedong made a special call to Nie Rongzhen: 100 yuan per month should be sent to Bai Koun's living allowances, and his opinion and ability to fully trust. Upon learning the news, Bai Kouen immediately wrote to Mao Zedong, "I decline the 100 yuan monthly allowance." In his work, Bai Qun was even more exhaustive and dedicated.
Nie Rongzhen recalled: Bai Qiun arrived in Wutai County, immediately began intense diagnosis and treatment work. In the first week, he examined more than 500 wounded and sick people in the hospital, and in the second week, he began to operate; after four weeks, he cured 147 wounded people, restoring them to health and returning them to the front line. In the 1938 anti-Sweeping Campaign, he treated 120 wounded and performed 105 operations in six days. In the battle of Jizhong Qi Hui under the command of He Long, he worked for 69 hours continuously and operated on 115 wounded soldiers. In the cruel war, he did not care about his personal safety, but regarded his inability to save a soldier's life as the greatest pain and suffering for him. He had also twice transfused 300 ml of blood each for the wounded (two of them were both awarded the rank of Major General in 1955). He told the medics, "I am type O blood, the universal transfusionist, draw mine!" "If we can use our own blood and save one soldier, it is better than killing 10 enemies."
"Comrade Baekchun was a doctor who made medicine his profession and excelled in his skills." Most of the medical team of the Eighth Route Army were rural fighters who had grown up while working after joining the army and had not received basic training. Seeing this situation, Bai Kouen personally wrote the teaching materials and gave the lectures himself. While saving thousands of soldiers' lives, he also completed an important medical work, "Organization and Technology of Division Field Hospitals in Guerrilla War", which was called "the last crystallization of his life's work". He also often went to various hospitals to check, and even put the lid of the teacup, the mouth to face upward, a kind of details are also made to explain. Once, he saw the doctor peeling pears to eat between surgeries, angry, grabbed a pear and threw out the window. He saw the doctor to the wounded bone, even forgot to put on the splint, angry, on the spot to give the doctor a slap. He said: this will make the wounded life-long disability. After the fire, he still patiently explained to the doctor why it was necessary to put on the splint, and demonstrated the operation essentials. He himself set an example of "extreme responsibility" for the wounded. In a very short time, the name of Bai Chun became a legend and the protector of the soldiers. "Attack! Baekchun is with us!" This was the slogan shouted by the fighters as they charged into battle. The fighters believed that with Bai Qun, their lives were guaranteed.
When Bai Koun arrived in China, he saw that the medical conditions were too poor, the level of doctors was very low, and the fighters could not get proper treatment, so he was very anxious and determined to build a regular hospital to teach and train doctors. From the point of view of the enemy's strength and our weakness and the situation of war, it was unrealistic to build such a hospital, but out of respect for Bakun, the chief still approved his plan. After a few months of hard work, Bakun's beloved hospital was completed, and he was determined to turn it into a "model hospital". However, only three weeks after it was completed and opened, the Japanese artillery destroyed it. Bai Chun realized that in the guerrilla war zone where the enemy is strong and we are weak, medical treatment should also be in the form of guerrilla, mobile hospitals. So he designed a portable operating room that could be carried by two mules. Some of the wounded were scattered in the guerrilla area residents' homes, he and the medical team risked the danger to go to do surgery for them. 4 months, traveled more than 1,500 miles, performed 315 operations, set up 13 operating rooms and bandages, and treated more than 1,000 wounded. In order to adapt to the war environment, convenient field treatment, mobile hospitals, the organization made a medicine pack, can be loaded with all the medical equipment and medicines used in 100 surgeries, 500 medication changes and 500 prescriptions, known as the "Lugouqiao medicine pack"; made a medicine exchange basket, known as the "Baikou'en Medicine Exchange Basket". Bai Chun's medicine changing basket".
He was extremely enthusiastic about his people and comrades, and he was highly responsible for his work and the wounded, always giving them meticulous care. He would rather starve and suffer himself than try to alleviate the pain of the wounded. He took cloth shoes to the wounded and wore straw shoes himself, even barefoot. In addition to surgery, he also wrote his own teaching materials. The teaching materials he wrote, such as "Preliminary Therapy", "Notes on Field Rescue", and "Thirteen Steps to Disinfection", were issued to everyone after translation, which greatly improved the efficiency of resuscitation, and trained a large number of medics and nurses for the Eighth Route Army. He was a highly skilled expert, but refused to enjoy a higher allowance than others. He once said, "You should not treat me as an antique (porcelain vase), I am here to work. You have to use me as a machine gun."
On Nov. 1, 1939, Bai Qiu'en accidentally cut his finger while operating on a seriously wounded man, and sepsis occurred from infected poisoning. Nie Rongzhen ordered the hospital and troops to do whatever it took to save Bai Kouen. On Nov. 12, Bai Kouen wrote his will: "Dear Commander Nie: I feel very bad today - perhaps I will say goodbye to you forever! My only hope is to be able to contribute more. ...... buy 250 pounds of quinine and 300 pounds of iron every year, exclusively for the treatment of those suffering from malaria and those suffering from anemia. Never go back to the Baoding or Tientsin area for medicines, as they are twice as expensive there as in Shanghai or Hong Kong. ...... The last two years have been the most enjoyable and rewarding of my life. Let me send a thousandfold thanks to you and the rest of the millions of dear comrades!" At the end of his life, Bai Qiu'en also said to the comrades around him, "Please tell Chairman Mao that I am grateful for the help he and the Chinese ****production party have given me. I believe that under Chairman Mao's leadership, the Chinese people will be liberated!"
After Bai's untimely death, the C**** Central Committee sent a message of condolence. Zhu De also called his relatives and wrote an article to express his sorrow and deep condolences. Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region Government's couplet reads, "Ten thousand miles of trekking, establish international peace, can be called **** production party model; full of blood, strengthen my resistance base, should be the medical profession as the northern fighting Tarzan." Yan'an "Xinhua Daily" also published a special article, mourning "our great savior of the wounded fell!" This kind of self-sacrificing spirit of touching the earth and sky, weeping ghosts and gods, I do not know how many Chinese soldiers and civilians have been moved and inspired. It can be said that China's later victory in the war of resistance against Japan and China's great achievements in the cause of construction, an important reason is that our party fully carry forward this "no self-interest specializing in the benefit of others," the spirit of Bai Qiu'en.
