Classification criteria for chemical protective clothing

Academic and flame-resistant tested against 21 basic chemicals.

The basic OSHA standard requires four levels of protection:

Levels A, B, C, and D. Workers at each hazard level must be equipped with the appropriate level of protective equipment and clothing to adequately protect the user.

Level A - indicates the greatest degree of hazard, which causes injury to a person's breath, eyes, or skin,

which may result from toxic vapors, gases, particles, chemical splashes, immersion, or contact with toxic materials.

It requires fully enclosed chemical protective clothing, which must come with SCBA or line respirators and appropriate accessories.

Level A chemical protective clothing can also be made to meet NFPA 1991 standards.

Level B denotes the most environmentally demanding respiratory protection, but not as demanding for skin protection.

It requires an SCBA or positive pressure line respirator with an escape cylinder, plus a hood, if available, and chemical protective clothing (one-piece and long-sleeved jackets; one-piece, one- or two-piece splash resistant suits; or one-piece suits that can be used separately).
