Seeking information and books on Lien Gahn

Leung Kahn, West Africa

Leung Kahn, an alumnus of Yang Ming University, graduated from the 20th Medical Faculty and participated in the first Diplomatic Replacement Service (DRS).

In November 2001, Mr. Lien set foot in Africa, which is regarded as a "black continent" by outsiders, and it gave him an "alternative" experience.

Because of the language barrier, poor living conditions, and outdated medical equipment, every day's visit to the clinic was like a brainstorming session. He hoped to combine his knowledge of public health and epidemiology to help the local people, so he launched the "Parasite Screening and Treatment for Elementary School Students" program to make up for the lack of medical resources.

And in response to the local environment, Lian Garn initiated the "Mindful Environmental Protection" campaign, whereby he exchanged garbage for old clothes to teach people to change their bad habits of littering. After the success of the first campaign, through the influence of the Internet, about 1,500 boxes of clothes were collected again. Although the local post office was paralyzed for a while, and many problems and troubles were brought to him, "during the whole event, I suddenly realized that there are still some positive things in life, which proves to this country full of poverty, pain, disease and death, and that is love".

And after witnessing volunteers and aid from all over the world, Liengaan told himself, "There is always something I can do! There's always something I can do to change something!" So he raised money to dig wells and build orphanages in the area.

In order to build the orphanage, he had to face a lot of difficulties and pressures from all sides. "If you want to do something without having to face difficulties, life would be too easy", he said. With the belief that "there is always a way to change something", he persevered in the 40-degree heat, bare shoulders and shovels, and bought his own materials to make bricks, the building materials needed. In this way, a few days before he was discharged from the army, the whole project was finally completed. However, in order to keep all the operations on track, he chose to stay for one more year, "As long as it is beneficial to the local community, it is worthwhile to delay returning to Taiwan to obtain a specialist license.

Looking back on his time serving in Africa, Lien Gahn believes that it is only through going to "do" that he realizes that the world is so big, there are so many places he can go, so many things he can do, so many things he can experience, and that he has no intention of remodeling Africa, but only wants to help the people around him who need help.

Australia has a famous beach, it is famous for the tidal wave every day to bring a lot of starfish, when the starfish is left on the beach, gradually by the sun to die, thousands of starfish carcasses have become a local spectacle. One day, a little boy appeared on the beach, picking up starfish and throwing them back into the sea one by one. When an old man saw this, he said to him, "Little brother, look at all the starfish on the beach, do you know that what you are doing won't change anything? The boy pointed to a starfish in his hand and said, "Yes, but for this one, it makes a difference."

The boy points to a starfish in his hand and says, "Yes, but for this one it makes a difference.

For him, his two-year experience in Africa has given him a new perspective on life. Although he is in what some would call a dark continent, he believes that he has experienced some of the most positive things in life, and that he is "doing all this just to have one more thing to try in life, and to share his love with those who need it". His "kindness" and "action" are like a modern-day Schweitzer, bringing about a new change through his own contribution. (Source: Lengaan in West Africa, Yuanshen Publishing House.
