There are many different types of occupations, each with its own characteristics and laws. To study and analyze occupational problems, occupations must be scientifically classified. Occupational classification is in accordance with certain standards and methods, according to the characteristics of the occupation itself, the occupation is divided into a number of categories, in order to reveal the differences and links between the various occupations. At present, countries around the world have basically adopted two methods of classification: horizontal classification and vertical classification. Horizontal classification is based on the nature of various occupations, while vertical classification is based on the horizontal classification method, which divides the same type of occupation into different grades according to the degree of difficulty or ease, complexity or simplicity of the work, the degree of responsibility, and the qualifications of the personnel required for each type of occupation, in order to reveal the hierarchical nature of occupations. The use of different classification criteria and methods will divide occupations into different types and produce different classification results. According to the three-industry approach, various types of occupations can be categorized into three industries, namely, the primary industry, which includes planting, farming and mining; the secondary industry, which includes construction and manufacturing; and the tertiary industry, which mainly refers to the service industry. According to the difference between physical and mental labor, workers are divided into white-collar workers and blue-collar workers. The Classification Catalogue of Occupational Trades of the People's Republic of China (PRC), issued by the Ministry of Labor in 1993, divides occupational trades into 46 major categories, with more than 4,700 types of trades covering virtually all the types of work engaged in by all workers in the country. From the point of view of vocational guidance, occupations in China can be divided into 11 major categories, 45 medium categories and 126 subcategories.
