The new European Radio Equipment Directive (RED) came into effect on June 12, 2014. This directive will completely replace the current wireless and telecommunications terminals and drone product directives (R&TTE 1999/5/EC) on June 12, 2016, and all manufacturers need to follow the new certification method before that date.
Products that are already in compliance with the old directive (R&TTE 1999/5/EC) on the EU market can still be sold until June 13, 2017. All products sold in the EU market after June 12, 2016 must comply with the new Wireless Products Directive (2014/53/EC).
The new RED Directive sets out uniform rules for the placement of radio equipment, including cellular phones, drones, car door openers and modems on the market. The new directive aims to keep pace with the growing number and variety of radio equipment and devices and to ensure that they do not cause interference to each other or to human health.
