Historical Development of the Chinese National Basketball Team

Chinese men's basketball team was founded in 1917, joined FIBA in 1936, withdrew in 1958 due to political reasons, and resumed its membership in the name of the People's Republic of China in 1974, the Chinese men's basketball team is currently the strongest national basketball team in the Asian region, perennial monopoly of the championship of the various basketball tournaments in which it participates in Asia and maintains the record for the most number of championships in the Asian Basketball Championship, 14 times. The Chinese men's basketball team is currently the strongest national basketball team in Asia. Since 1978, the team has been participating in the World Basketball Championships, and has been the best Asian team in the World Championships. The team has finished 11th, 12th, 9th, 14th and 8th in the several World Championships that China has participated in, and the team's best finish in the World Championships was a third-place finish at the 1994 Friendship Games in St. Petersburg.

In recent years, the Chinese men's basketball team has shown some ability to beat top European teams. In the 2004 Athens Olympics, China, under head coach Del Harris, qualified for the Elite 8 with a narrow 67-66 victory over the defending World Champion Serbian men's basketball team in the final game of the group stage. In the 2006 World Championships in Japan, China also emerged from Group D and defeated Senegal and Slovenia in the final two group games to advance to the knockout stage of the Round of 16, where it ultimately lost to Greece, who later eliminated the United States to win the tournament's silver medal, 64-95, and finished 15th out of 24 teams in the World Championships.

The team has superstar players like NBA Houston Rockets center Yao Ming, Wizards Yi Jianlian and Lakers Sun Yue, as well as excellent players like Wang Zhizhi, who has joined the NBA league, and the current head coach is the American coach Deng Hua.
