The prevention and treatment of mental retardation is one of the key issues to improve the quality of the population. The prevalence rate of mental retardation in children abroad is about 3%, and it is 2-3% in rural areas and 1% in cities in China. According to a preliminary survey, among the population of 1 1 billion in China, there are 24 million people with mental retardation. The main feature of this disease is mental retardation, with IQ below 70. This kind of patients can not meet the objective requirements in study, life and behavior, which brings a heavy burden to the family and society. At present, there is no satisfactory treatment for this disease. In recent ten years, we have explored and studied this problem, and made some progress in treating mental retardation with traditional Chinese medicine, which proves that the intelligence of mentally retarded children is still possible to improve. I. General information
1 396 mentally retarded children were admitted to the hospital, ranging from 3 years old to 24 years old, with an average age of 15.6 years old. 833 males and 563 females; Among them, 92 cases were mild (stupid), 380 cases were moderate (stupid) and 924 cases were severe (idiot). Some patients are often accompanied by visual impairment (27 cases) and dyskinesia (including paralysis, rigidity and ataxia). (382 cases) and epilepsy (264 cases). The vast majority of children have been treated in various places and failed. Tracing back to the pathogenic factors, there were 65,438 0,030 cases of dystocia, birth asphyxia, premature delivery and forceps, 285 cases of high fever, convulsion and diarrhea, 4 cases of chromosomal abnormalities and 77 cases of unknown causes.
Second, the intelligence inspection methods

If the patient reaches the average value, it is considered as passing, and 10 is given. If the total score of the test results is less than 40 points, combined with the medical history data, it can be considered as mental retardation. The total score of this group 1 396 children is below 40. In the course of treatment, several items were selected for follow-up observation, and the progress was judged with reference to academic performance and parents' feedback.
Three, other auxiliary inspection:
1. EEG: EEG was performed in 530 cases in this group, among which 236 cases had moderate and severe abnormalities, and the waveforms on both sides were asymmetric. Slow spikes were still seen in epileptic patients.
2. Cranial CT scan: All 223 cases underwent plain CT scan before treatment, among which 85 cases had different degrees of CT changes, including focal low density of brain, widening of sulcus, narrowing of gyrus, enlargement of ventricle and cystic change.
