History and Achievements: The School of Medicine of Shanghai Jiaotong University originated from St. John's University School of Medicine, Aurora University School of Medicine and Tongde Medical College at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The medical school has strong medical resources, advanced medical equipment and developed medical technology. It is one of the earliest institutions in China to set up a medical education and research laboratory, with strict teaching management and emphasis on teaching research. Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine was the first to successfully rescue a large area of burns in the world medical history, the first to complete the surgery of re-implantation of a broken arm, and the first to utilize the principle of differentiation induction in the treatment of leukemia with success. Academician Wang Zhenyi, a lifelong professor at Ruijin Hospital attached to the Medical School, was awarded the National Highest Science and Technology Prize in the recent disciplinary assessment organized by the Ministry of Education.
