In 2001, Ms. Kwong started to practice Buddhism under the name of Ruyue, and became a director of the Buddha's Light International Association.
In November 2003, she donated the first "Phyllis Kwong Buddha's Light Primary School" at Yunju Mountain in Jiujiang.
Early 2008, Jiangxi suffered a rare rain, snow and ice disaster, Kwong donated cotton clothes and quilts to the affected areas, and built a number of hope elementary school and middle schools in Lichuan.
In 2008, after the 5-12 earthquake, Kwong Mei-wan mobilized people around her to donate to the disaster area, donating 15 pieces of treasures of about 5 million Hong Kong dollars to help Sichuan disaster relief.
On December 7, 2008, Kwong went deep into the earthquake-stricken Hui County, Longnan City, Gansu Province to understand the situation, donated 2.1 million yuan RMB for education and 1,000 quilts, and decided to set up 10 Hope Primary Schools in Gansu.
As of 2010, there were 35 Hope Primary Schools built by Kwong in her own name, benefiting more than 100,000 schoolchildren. Every year, Kwong would take a slot to go back to the schools to reunite with the children and serve as a lecturer herself.
On August 14, 2011, Phyllis attended a ceremony to donate 20 rehabilitation centers to the Guangdong Red Cross, as well as Beyond Rehabilitation medical equipment, at a cost of 9.6 million RMB.
On January 27, 2015, Ms. Kwong attended a panel discussion of Hong Kong CPPCC members at the "Two Sessions" of the Jiangxi Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) in Jiangxi Province as a member of the CPPCC.
