Born in 1955 in Tianjin, he grew up in Shaanxi.
In 1971, he went to build a railroad, and soon after joined a war propaganda team on the construction site as an announcer. He was soon transferred to the Second Railway Bureau's Cultural Troupe. In 1983, he took part in the TV series "The Bending Stone Trail". In the same year, he was transferred to Sichuan People's Art Theater as a drama actor. In 1984, he became involved in the movie industry, playing the main character Ma Bin in the feature film Suspects.
