Previously, Nikon had three camera production bases in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, Thailand and China. But with the popularity of smartphones, camera sales have been hit hard, and Nikon's production base in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, was shut down in 2017, and now with the closure of the camera production base in Sendai City, all of Nikon's camera production lines will be transferred to Thailand.
This means that Nikon cameras will be completely transformed from "Made in Japan" to "Made in Thailand".
Nikon stated that "the quality level will not be reduced even if it is manufactured overseas". The factory in Miyagi Prefecture will maintain employment, continue to produce parts, etc., in addition to assigning personnel to health care, sensors and other businesses with growth potential.
According to reports, the company also plans to close two factories in Yamagata and Fukushima prefectures, which are engaged in the processing of replacement lens parts for digital cameras.
