China's largest chipmaker is Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), a subsidiary of the State Integrated Circuit Industry Investment Fund Co.
SMIC is China's first Hong Kong-listed chipmaker and the world's third-largest IC manufacturing company, with a significant presence in the Chinese market.SMIC was founded in 2000 in Shanghai and has factories and offices in Xiamen, Tianjin and Beijing. The company's business is mainly based on foundry manufacturing, providing a variety of wafer fabrication and technical services.
Their products are used in automotive, consumer electronics, medical equipment, communications and other fields. As of May 2009, SMIC has one 300mm chip fab and three 200mm chip fabs in Shanghai, two 300mm chip fabs in Beijing, one 200mm chip fab in Tianjin, one 200mm chip fab in Shenzhen under under construction, and a packaging and testing plant in Chengdu.
Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) also has customer service and marketing offices in the U.S., Europe, and Japan, as well as a representative office in Hong Kong. In addition, SMIC operates and manages a 300mm chip fab in Wuhan on behalf of Wuhan Xinxin Integrated Circuit Manufacturing Co. Since its inception, SMIC has grown to become the largest and most advanced foundry in Mainland China and the fourth largest in the world.
In 2010, the Company achieved its first annual profit and record revenue after its IPO year.
