From July 17 to 22, heavy rains fell across much of Henan province. Floods triggered by the rains killed 302 people, left 50 missing and affected more than 14.5 million people, according to local authorities. The floods also damaged infrastructure in many parts of the province, including maternal and child health care institutions at all levels, thus affecting local basic health care services and increasing the risks faced by women and children.
The medical equipment, purchased by UNICEF, includes electrocardiogram (ECG) monitors for newborns and adults, ventilators, automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and medical refrigerators. The first batch of medical equipment has been handed over to the Henan Provincial Health and Health Commission, while the rest will arrive in Xinmi in the near future. The supplies are scheduled to be sent to medical and health service organizations in nine hard-hit areas, including Xinmi City, Dengfeng and Xingyang in Zhengzhou, Weihui and Muye districts in Xinxiang, Mengzhou City in Jiaozuo, Qi County in Hebi, and Fugou and Xihua in Zhoukou.
"UNICEF is y saddened by the loss of life and injuries caused by the recent floods and their devastating impact on the lives of many people. In support of the people and government of Henan, we are mobilizing resources to help restore health care services for mothers and children." UNICEF Representative in China, Xinyue Rui, said, "While continuing to support the government in addressing emergency needs, UNICEF is also ready to support the Chinese government in building capacity for disaster preparedness in order to reduce the risks faced by future natural disasters."
In the wake of the floods in Henan Province, UNICEF is working with the Chinese government to support vulnerable children and their families. Prior to this medical equipment assistance, UNICEF had already provided 8,200 sets of personal hygiene items and 1,500 first aid kits to children in the affected areas.
