The predecessor of the College of Automation and Electrical Engineering, the Department of Electrical Engineering, was one of the first five departments established by Lanzhou Institute of Railway when it was founded in 1958. In that year, it recruited the first batch of communication and signal undergraduate students and electric locomotive specialization class students. Subsequently, 6 sessions of communication and railroad signaling undergraduate students and 2 sessions of electric locomotive undergraduate students were recruited consecutively. During the Cultural Revolution, from 1966 to 1970, the national colleges and universities stopped enrollment, from 1971 to 1976, our department enrolled the students of the two majors of wired communication and railroad signaling for the workers, peasants and soldiers, and in 1977, the whole country resumed the enrollment of higher education, our department continued to enroll the undergraduates of the two majors of wired communication and railroad signaling, and in 1979, the State Education Commission began to restructure the majors and disciplines, and began to enroll the students of master's degree and doctor's degree. In 1980, the department began to enroll master's degree students.
In 1979, the Ministry of Railways approved the creation of automatic control undergraduate program, and began enrolling that year. In 1993, the former railroad signaling major was renamed as automatic control major, and the former automatic control major was renamed as industrial automation major, referred to as automation major. In September 2012, the automatic control major was renamed as rail transportation signal and control. In the early stage of the establishment of the school, the Department of Electrical Engineering was founded by 30 faculty members from the Beijing and Tang Institutes represented by Prof. Sun Qiyin, an expert in wired communication, Prof. Jiang Jiayou, an expert in electrical machinery, Prof. Ban Jichao, an expert in radio technology, and Prof. Wang Zhonglin, an expert in railway signals. In 1977, when the national college entrance examination system was restored, the Department of Electrical Engineering ushered in the restoration of the college entrance examination system for the first batch of undergraduates, i.e., Tong 77 and Xin 77, and in the fall of 1978, Tong 78 and Xin 78 were recruited, and in order to enhance the faculty strength, the school drew students from various departments to set up an electronic teacher's class in the Department of Electrical Engineering, which was established by Prof. Jichao Ban and others in 1979 as the bachelor's degree program of automation (renamed as Industrial Automation Program in 1993), and was renamed as Industrial Automation Program. After 1997, the national higher education carried out a large-scale expansion of enrollment, in 1999 by Professor Ren Enen and others founded the electrical engineering and automation program; 2002-2003, the College of Information and Communication Technology and successfully declared two undergraduate programs of electronic science and technology and electronic information engineering. At this time, the School of Information and Communication Technology has developed from four undergraduate majors before 1997 to seven undergraduate majors. The number of students enrolled in full-time undergraduate programs grew from more than 1,700 in 1997 to more than 3,500, becoming the largest secondary school of Lanzhou Jiaotong University.
Reform and opening up, deepening education and teaching reforms make the Department of Telecommunications in the professional setup of the rapid development, and at the same time in the discipline of degree construction, scientific research, teaching materials, laboratory construction and faculty construction and other aspects of the rapid growth, has borne fruitful results.
In 1981, approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, the discipline of automation and control of railroad transportation became the first batch of master's degree-granting points in China. Before that, Prof. Jichao Ban had already enrolled the first batch of graduate students in 1980, and Prof. Jichao Ban and Prof. Qiyin Sun enrolled the second batch of graduate students in 1981. The main professional direction: industrial automation, locomotive (vehicle) control, wind power generation technology, building electrical and intelligent. (Third-year sub-specialty direction) Railway Signal and Control is a national specialty, and the first-level discipline of Transportation Engineering and the second-level discipline of Traffic Information Engineering and Control are both doctoral and master's degree authorization points. In the past two years, it has undertaken more than 30 scientific research projects, including 2 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 5 key projects of the Ministry of Railway, and 5 projects of the Natural Science Foundation of Gansu Province. It has won two second prizes for scientific and technological progress at provincial and ministerial levels, two third prizes for scientific and technological progress at provincial and ministerial levels, and five invention patents. There are 21 full-time teachers, including 7 doctoral supervisors and 15 master's supervisors.
Graduates can be engaged in system operation, automatic control, information processing, test and analysis, research and development and design, operation and maintenance management in the fields of railroad, urban rail transit, electronics, information and instrumentation, as well as teaching and scientific research in colleges and universities and research institutes.
