The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) is located at the junction of Cheong Wan Road and Hong Chong Road in Yau Tsim Mong District, close to the Cross Harbour Tunnel in Hung Hom and the Hung Hom Station of the KCRC. It covers an area of about 9.35 million square meters and has about 22,000 full-time and part-time students.

The university emphasized training in technical and engineering disciplines, as opposed to the only two universities (the University of Hong Kong and the Chinese University of Hong Kong) that followed a generalist approach at the time.

History

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University was formerly known as the Hong Kong Government Institute of Advanced Industrial Studies (HKGIAIS), which was established in 1937 at the former site on Wood Road in Wan Chai. In 1947, it was transformed into the Hong Kong Technical College (also known as the Hong Kong Polytechnic Institute in the 1970s), offering both full-time and part-time courses, and was relocated to its present site in Hung Hom in 1957.

On August 1, 1972, the Hong Kong Polytechnic was established to offer diploma and higher diploma courses in technical and practical subjects. It provided secondary school graduates with an alternative to the two mainstream universities.

On November 25, 1994, the Hong Kong Polytechnic was officially upgraded to The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

July 1999, The School of Professional Education and Executive Development (SPEED) was established to provide continuing professional education programs for adults.

In August 2000, the Hong Kong Cyber University (HKCyberU) was established as the first cyber university in Hong Kong to offer distance learning online programs.

In 2002, The Hong Kong Community College (HKCC) was established to offer associate degree programs. On October 2, 2002, 11,273 students, faculty, staff and alumni of the University broke the Guinness World Record for Rainbow Wave at the Hong Kong Stadium***. This was also a celebration of the University's 65th anniversary and a fundraising event for the Children's Cancer Foundation and the Hong Kong Society for the Aged.

January 2004 saw the commencement of Phase VII and Phase VIII of the Campus Development Program.

Future Development

Phase VII of the Campus Development Program (Block Y), which commenced in January 2004, was completed in September 2005. Phase 8 is still awaiting land allocation from the Government.

In the future, the Polytechnic University will demolish its staff quarters, Bauhinia Court, and build a four-star academic hotel on the site. The university's president said on Oct. 4, 2005, that the new hotel building was expected to cost HK$500 million and would be completed in 2008, and that the new hotel would be built on the same site. He also said the new hotel would provide internships for hotel management students and would also be used for rental, research and teaching purposes.
