The Chernobyl nuclear accident... is it still radioactive?

Twenty years on, the ecologically disastrous consequences of this nuclear accident are far from fading. According to a serviceman who has worked in the zone for 19 years, many buildings and facilities in the zone still contain varying degrees of excess radiation. That was why the Government of Ukraine had so far established a strict ban on minors under the age of 18 living in the zone of separation. Anyone leaving the quarantine zone is subject to specialized inspections.

According to incomplete statistics, 2.5 million victims of nuclear radiation, including 473,400 children, are currently under medical supervision in Ukraine***. Nuclear radiation has led to an increase in the incidence of thyroid cancer by more than 10 times. Large quantities of the radionuclides iodine-131 and caesium-137, which have a very long decay period, spread through the flow of air, seriously contaminating the air, soil and rivers around the site of the accident and destroying the local natural environment as well as the ecosystem. Some experts estimate that it will take another century for the consequences of the accident to be completely eliminated.
