On June 15, 2017, the hospice center at Peking University Shougang Hospital was officially opened, the first hospice ward in Beijing to be opened in a tertiary general hospital. In addition to being staffed with doctors and nurses, it also has nutritionists and psychologists. Beijing plans to set up hospice wards in 16 medical institutions on a pilot basis and include related medical services in the reimbursement scope of basic medical insurance. As of 2019, there are 24 medical institutions in the city that carry out hospice work, with 647 beds available for hospice services, 19 of which have been included in the medical insurance program.
