A generation of Mawei factory history, the newborn of Fujian Ship Bureau

1.

The car drove on Riverside Drive, and the destination was the hometown where Jun's dad lived as a child - Mawei Horse Limit Hill.

The hill stands on the Mawei Peninsula, and the entire hill has been planned as a tourist attraction.

In the late 19th century, a group of French shipwrights lived here. There was originally a Majiang Hospital on the hill, a typical French building with hexagonal windows.

Coming down from Ma Li Shan, we passed the Zhaozhong Shrine, which was built by the Qing government to commemorate the 1,000 naval officers and soldiers who died in the Battle of Ma Jiang.

The Battle of Majiang Sea, Zhaozhong Shrine, national honor and shame, are all here.

2.

The car passed through the intersection of Mawei Shipyard, Grandpa Jun read: If you can get into the gate of Mawei factory, you can see it again!

Retired for many years, a few years have passed since the last old people's day organized by the factory, and Grandpa Jun would like to go back to the factory to take a look.

Taking the heart to try, Mr. Jun's dad drove around to the gate of Mawei Shipyard.

The door in front of the pole, there is a person riding an electric car out of the factory.

Grandpa Jun sharp eyes, recognized the years not seen "small" colleagues, he has not retired, led us into the Mawei factory.

The horsetail shipyard has long been one of the local tourist attractions.

Nowadays, the Mawei factory still retains a small part of the ship repair business, there are still heavy machinery in the factory, due to safety considerations, the factory temporarily does not receive casual visitors.

This time, we can enter the factory visit, really lucky.

3.

Once into the Mawei Shipyard, only to see a gantry crane, above the printed logo, shaped like waves. The graphic is a combination of letters M and W, which is the logo of Mawei Shipyard. M and W are the initial letters of pinyin for horse and tail respectively.

The predecessor of Mawei Shipyard was the Fujian Shipbuilding Bureau, the first naval organization established by the Qing government.

We parked in front of the Foreign Experts Building. Next to it was a light tower-shaped building. I was curious and took a picture of the white tower.

Grandpa Jun introduced the white tower as the old clock tower of the Mawei factory. Before the 1970s, workers in the factory listened to the sound of the white tower bell tower to go to work or work.

In the seventies, Mawei Factory opened the factory bell, the bell ringer off duty, the white tower bell tower has become a decoration.

Walking through the office building of the Mawei factory, a giant tower crane and gantry cranes are in front of you.

The largest gantry crane in the Mawei factory, spanning nearly 100 meters, can lift 200 tons of heavy objects. Today, the mega gantry crane and shipbuilding workshop have been relocated to Rough Lu Island in Lianjiang County.

Before the 90s, there were always casualties in the Mawei factory for every big ship built. Some of them were hit by heavy objects falling from the iron wall, and some of them were accidentally falling into the cabin from a high place. All these accidents, as if the major shipyards of the year into the "practice".

The accompanying old colleague said, now can not dare to take it lightly, the responsibility of safety is heavier than Mount Tai.

China has a number of large shipyards, more famous than the Mawei factory is not a few. Among them, there are two famous shipyards and Mawei factory has its origins: one is the Dalian Red Flag Shipyard, now renamed Dalian Shipyard; the second is the Shanghai Jiangnan Shipyard.

Grandpa Jun worked in the materials section, and some of the shipbuilding materials of Mawei factory, such as steel plates, were shipped from Liaoning.

4.

I have passed by the Mawei factory, along the way just a glimpse, and did not feel the grandeur of the giant tower cranes and gantry cranes.

When I walked into the Mawei factory, after listening to Grandpa Jun's explanation, I really feel the Mawei factory heavy historical style.

The excitement of revisiting the old place was all over Grandpa Jun's face.

Grandpa Jun said to me, "You've come to the right place today, it's worth it. I've never seen such a large shipbuilding equipment, right?"

I said to Grandpa Jun, "Yes, I came today worth it. Dad, a trip to the Mawei factory today. For me, it's to feel the novelty; for you, it's to look for memories."

Grandpa Jun smiled and nodded.

Jun's dad chimed in, "That's so true what you said."

5.

When passing by the dockyard, there was a tin shell with "Aju class" written on it, and Jun's dad asked Grandpa Jun: "Dad, what does this 'Aju class' mean? "

Grandpa Jun said he did not know, retired for a long time, some new words have not heard.

The old colleague who accompanied him said that 'Koshu' is a term used in the Japanese shipbuilding industry. The term "Kaju" means "outfitting", and "class" means "workshop".

What is the 'suit' part, I asked. How do you write those two words?

Grandpa Jun said that the left side of the word outfitting is boat and the right side is west. Outfitting, is the final assembly, internal installation part of shipbuilding.

The river docked a few horse ship (Mawei shipyard ship), the pier, one or two workers are winding the cable.

Grandpa Jun is facing the river, pinching his fingers while talking to himself.

I was curious and asked, "Dad, what are you counting?"

Grandpa Jun: "Today is the sixth day of the month, I'm counting the tide time."

"How is this tide calculated?" I asked again.

Grandpa Jun: "The tide time on the first and fifteenth day of the lunar calendar is 12:00 a.m. There are two tides every day, one in the first half of the day and one in the second half of the day. Counting from the first day, every additional day, the tide time increases by eight characters (Fuzhou dialect, one character represents 5 minutes, eight characters is 40 minutes). Today the sixth day, so the tide time is about four o'clock in the morning and afternoon."

So it is.

There is a boat docked on the river, waiting to be repaired.

Despite the rust, the white spray paint on the hull says "Horse Ship".
