PMP Material Properties
Poly(methylpentene) :Poly(methylpentene), a polymer of 4-methylpentene-1, with the following characteristics: very low density, relatively high melting point and abnormal transparency. The polymer is used in a variety of pure and reinforced grades in a wide range of market segments: packaging, fibers, electrical/electronic, housewares, transportation, appliances, pharmaceutical products, and labware. Chemistry and Properties: Poly(methylpentene) (PMP) is produced by the polymerization of 4-methylpentene-1, an intermediate product of propylene dimerization. The reaction product is a granular powder, which is then stabilized and extruded into pellets. The addition of reinforcement can improve the physical properties.

The homopolymer of PMP is a tough, rigid plastic with high tensile modulus and low elongation. Containing a small amount of high alpha olefin, PMP*** polymer has a slightly lower melting and softening point, lower modulus and higher elongation. Properties of the end product that enable PMP to be used in a wide range of applications include a high melting point, exceptional clarity, excellent electrical properties, good chemical resistance, and low density. one of the major advantages of PMP is the good thermal properties, its high melting temperature (464°F), combined with its Vicat softening point (370°F) broadens the range of properties normally associated with polyolefins. pMP has been shown to be a good choice for a wide variety of applications after a short period of time of exposure to temperatures up to 40

Thermal properties can be improved by the addition of glass reinforcements, and some grades with fillers have heat deflection temperatures as high as 440° F. High transparency is another major advantage of PMP, with 90% light transmission and haze values as low as 1.5% being responsible for its many uses. Light transmission in the near UV region exceeds that of glass and other transparent polymers.The crystalline and amorphous phases of PMP have similar densities and refractive indices, which makes it transparent.PMP exhibits exceptional electrical properties. It has the lowest dielectric constant among synthetic resins, and in addition, it has

excellent resistance to electrical isolation, low loss factor, high dielectric constant, high resistance and resistivity. Its excellent dielectric properties and low dielectric loss angle exceed those of other polyolefins and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). As a polyolefin, PMP offers good chemical resistance. It is highly resistant to acids, bases, water, and organic media, as well as most hydrocarbons, although some light hydrocarbons and chlorinated solvents can cause it to swell. Above 140° F, PMP's solvent resistance is superior to all other transparent polymers.PMP's density of 0.835 g/cm3 is the lowest of all available thermoplastics. PMP should not be continuously exposed to sunlight and high-energy radiation. However, some grades can withstand medical radiation sterilization. Processing : PMP polymer can be processed with conventional equipment for injection molding, extrusion, thermoforming, extrusion blow molding, injection blow molding and coating. Because its polyolefin characteristics are non-absorbent, it does not require drying prior to processing, and in addition, it can be colored, resulting in dark or clear color effects. As with other polyolefins, molecular weight and molecular weight distribution have the greatest impact on physical properties and flow characteristics. Specialty grades are typically used in injection molding. Applications: PMP's transparency and physicochemical and thermal properties, processability, and cost make it a material of choice for a wide range of commercial applications. Packaging applications include closures, containers for food, bottles and plates where the thermal properties enable food packaging and closures to withstand the high temperatures found in steam chambers. As a coating, PMP is used for its release properties in the packaging of bakery products and frozen foods. It has low surface activity and is therefore resistant to stains. The dielectric (insulating) properties of PMP materials are used in cables, connectors, tubing, and wire protectors.Another advantage of PMP in these applications is its retention of electrical properties under certain thermal and environmental conditions. Household appliances, such as food containers and microwave cookware, utilizes PMP's transparency, oil resistance and its high microwave permeability, which also includes fluid reservoirs, liquid level indicators, fittings and microwave oven components. PMP is also used in medical devices and laboratory supplies such as centrifuge tubes, syringes, filter housings, measuring cylinders and fittings, which utilize its transparency. Chemical and

Impact resistance is also utilized, as is its ability to be sterilized by steam autoclave, radiation or ethylene oxide. Other applications include funnels, shrink tubing, test tubing, lamp shades and general industrial applications. BUSINESS INFORMATION: PMP is an inert, non-toxic polyolefin material that meets FDA guidelines and Japanese and West German health standards. It is priced between low-cost materials like styrene and high-priced, high-performance plastics like polycarbonate. Pure and reinforced PMP polymers (TPX) are available from Mitsui Petrochemicals Ltd. in Japan.
