In September 2000, in order to comply with China's higher education reforms, the former West China University of Medical Sciences merged with the former Sichuan University to form the new Sichuan University, West China University of Medical Sciences was renamed West China Medical Center of Sichuan University, which consists of the West China School of Clinical Medicine, the West China College of Stomatology, the West China College of Pharmacy, the West China College of Basic Medicine and Forensic Science, and the West China College of Public **** Health, collectively known as the West China Five Hospitals. Sichuan University West China Medical Center, formerly known as West China Medical University under the former Ministry of Health, is one of the first four comprehensive key medical universities listed in the national "211 Project"
It originated from the private West China Union College founded in 1910 in Huaxiba, Chengdu, by five churches in the U.S., the U.K., Canada and other organizations. It is the earliest comprehensive medical university in China, and one of the first of its kind in China's modern higher medical education.
The West China Hospital of Sichuan University is the largest general hospital in China with 4,300 beds, a complete range of disciplines, strong faculty, excellent medical technology, advanced diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, and powerful scientific research; and the West China Second Hospital is a maternity and children's specialized hospital integrating medical treatment, teaching, scientific research, and preventive health care, with 730 beds.
West China Stomatological Hospital is the first stomatological hospital in China, and its medical technology and service quality are renowned both at home and abroad, and it is a well-known stomatological hospital at home and abroad, with 200 beds and 325 dental chairs; West China Stomatological Hospital No. 4 is the only occupational disease hospital of the Ministry of Health, and it undertakes the medical treatment of the patients with occupational disease in western China and the rescue of the acute poisonings in Sichuan Province, with 600 beds.
