With the joint efforts of experts from the National Dental Prevention and Control Steering Group and Advisory Group, 1989 was jointly signed by the Ministry of Health, the National Patriotic Health Association, the State Education Commission, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Radio, Film and Television, the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, the All-China Women's Federation, the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League and the National Committee on Aging, and designated September 20th of each year as "national love teeth day".
Its purpose is to mobilize all sectors of society to participate in and support oral health care through the "national love teeth day" activities, extensively carry out mass oral health knowledge popularization education, enhance the self-awareness and ability of oral health care, and improve the oral health level of the people throughout the country.

The purpose of Love Teeth Day is to mobilize social forces to prevent dental diseases among the masses through the activities of Love Teeth Day. The popularization of oral knowledge will strengthen the concept of oral health and self-awareness of oral health care, establish oral health care behavior, and thus improve the oral health level of the whole nation.
There are many patients with dental caries and periodontal diseases in China, but the manpower, material resources and financial resources for oral health care are very limited. Therefore, the fundamental way to solve the dental problem lies in prevention. Setting up tooth love day is an important measure to strengthen oral prevention and implement the policy of putting prevention first.
