Haikou consists of Hainan Island (a part of the island), Haidian Island and Xinbu Island, with a total area of 3 145.93 square kilometers, including 2,284.49 square kilometers of land area and 86 1.44 square kilometers of sea area. Haikou enjoys a comfortable and pleasant climate and a first-class ecological environment, ranking first in the national air quality ranking list of 169 cities at prefecture level and above issued by People's Republic of China (PRC) and the Ministry of Ecology and Environment all the year round.

The name "Haikou" first appeared in the Song Dynasty, with a history of more than 900 years, meaning a piece of land at the mouth of Nandujiang River. Haikou belongs to Qiongshan County in history, and its name evolution includes Haikou Shop in Song Dynasty, Haikou Port in Yuan Dynasty, Haikou Capital, Haikou Station in Ming Dynasty, and Qiongzhoukou in Qing Dynasty.
In the pre-Qin period, Haikou belonged to Luoyue of Baiyue, and at the end of Qin Dynasty, it belonged to Nanyue. 11/year BC (the sixth year of Emperor Ding Yuan of the Han Dynasty), Haikou belonged to Zhuya County, which had jurisdiction over the secretariat of Jiaozhou in the Three Kingdoms period, Jiaozhou in Guangzhou, Jiaozhou in the Western Jin Dynasty and Yazhou in the Liang Dynasty. Sui belongs to Yangzhou, Tang belongs to Lingnan Road, then to Nanhan, and Song belongs to Guangnan West Road. The Yuan Dynasty successively belonged to Zhongshu in Huguang and other places, Xuanwei Department in Haibei Hainan Road, Guangxi and other provinces. After A.D. 1369 (the second year of Hongwu in Ming Taizu), it belonged to Guangdong.
