Password to save eyes: Can dry eye be cured? What are the common methods?

As a recovering person of dry eye, I can say that dry eye can be recovered.

However, due to the different causes of each person, the degree of possible recovery will be different. Early symptoms can be found in time, and some people can recover with active treatment 100%. For severe dry eye for more than ten years, it is difficult to recover, but it can be improved to some extent, so that the eyes no longer live in pain.

"Dry eye can be cured. Dry eye, also known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca, is a common eye disease. Usually, due to aging factors, long-term chronic inflammatory stimulation of the eyes, vitamin A deficiency and other reasons, the glands that secrete internal fluid in the eyes shrink and their functions deteriorate, resulting in insufficient tear secretion. Patients will have symptoms such as bloodshot eyes, redness, dryness, tingling, foreign body sensation, fear of light, and slight vision loss. The severity of the disease can be diagnosed and understood by doing tear secretion experiment and tear film rupture time examination.

First of all, you have to know the type of dry eye before you can deal with it.

Dry eye with insufficient water sample: due to the low function of lacrimal gland to secrete tears, such as congenital achalasia;

l? Mucin deficiency dry eye: insufficient secretion of mucin, such as? Dry eye caused by Stevens-Johnson syndrome, pemphigoid and trachoma;

l? Lipid deficiency xerophthalmia: it is caused by the dysfunction of lamellar glands, because the lamellar glands of the face are glands that secrete lipids;

l? Dry eye caused by abnormal tear dynamics (distribution): such as eyelid defect and entropion. , will lead to incomplete blinking, tears can not be evenly distributed on the eye surface, resulting in dry eye symptoms;

l? Mixed dry eye: it is the most common dry eye in clinic, which is caused by two or more reasons.

The treatment of dry eye can be divided into several stages:

First of all, the first stage is the control period to control the improvement of the disease.

The second stage is the recovery period, so that the eyes can slowly recover.

The third stage is the consolidation period. After the patient's condition improves, take good care of his eyes. The eyes are very sensitive organs.

Patients with dry eye should pay attention to eye protection, do a good job in life care, prevent the deterioration of eye diseases, receive professional treatment in time, curb the development of the disease and restore eye health. Especially don't work in front of the computer for a long time, and pay attention to the rest of your eyes.

Patients with dry eye should eat more fresh vegetables and fruits, and at the same time increase the intake of vitamins A, B, C and E. In order to prevent dry cornea, dry eyes and decreased vision, computer operators should eat more foods rich in vitamin A, which can improve their vision, but they should also sit in front of the computer as little as possible.

So what are the common treatments for dry eye?

I'll give you a list today for your reference:

1. Artificial tears

For mild dry eye caused by computer use, reading and study, the best treatment may only be to use artificial tears or other lubricating eye drops frequently. Artificial tears are usually the first step in the treatment of dry eye.

Artificial tears contain preservatives, and some contain no preservatives. It is recommended to use those without preservatives, and the daily cost is about one or two yuan. I won't talk about specific brands here.

There are many brands of artificial tears that can be used without prescription. The challenge of using artificial tears is not a lack of available drugs, but too many brands and formulas to choose from. Artificial tears and other over-the-counter lubricating eye drops have different compositions and viscosities.

Artificial tears with low viscosity are "light" and contain water. When used, they usually provide quick relief and little or no visual blur. But usually their soothing effect is very short-lived, and sometimes they must be used very frequently to get enough effect. On the other hand, artificial tears with high viscosity are more like gel and can provide more lasting lubrication. But usually these drops will cause obvious blurred vision within a few minutes after application. For this reason, this type of artificial tears is usually not suitable for use during work or other situations that require vision, such as driving. On the contrary, it is recommended to use artificial tears with high viscosity only before going to bed.

2. lacrimal duct embolism

Lacrimal duct embolization is sometimes used to treat dry eye to help tears stay on the surface of the eye for a longer time. Dry eye can be relieved by preventing water from being discharged from the eyes too quickly.

Lacrimal duct plug is a small aseptic device, which is inserted into one of the small openings (i.e. lacrimal punctum) of lacrimal duct located in the inner corner of upper and lower eyelids. After these openings are blocked, tears can no longer be discharged from the eyes into the nasal cavity through these pipes. This can make the tear film stay on the eye surface for a longer time, and dry eye can also be alleviated. So, where will the tears go in this case? Usually they just evaporate from the surface of the eyes, and there are no other complications. However, if the insertion of lacrimal duct plug leads to excessive tears in the eyes, the number of times can be reduced appropriately.

3. Treatment of meibomian gland

The proportion of dry eye caused by insufficient oil secreted by meibomian gland at the edge of eyelid is very large. The openings of these glands are near the base of eyelashes. If there is blockage, the oil necessary to prevent the tear film from evaporating too fast will not work. This is called meibomian gland dysfunction, which can lead to evaporative dry eye.

In order to treat meibomian gland dysfunction, the meibomian gland is generally heated and massaged first, and then the contents of meibomian gland obstruction (hardened meibomian and possible other substances) are squeezed with tweezers. In order to fully dredge the meibomian gland, considerable pressure must be exerted on the eyelid. This kind of massage usually makes people feel uncomfortable, but the effect is remarkable.

4. Hot compress therapy

This method can be used as a more comfortable alternative to meibomian gland therapy, and the meibomian can be softened by simply applying hot compress on the closed eyelid. However, in order to achieve better results, some researchers point out that hot compress must be kept at 42 degrees Celsius for more than 10 minutes, and it must be applied at least twice during this period. Most people can't or don't want to treat this dry eye correctly, so they can only compress it at a lower temperature, so they often can't achieve the expected effect.

5.LipiFlow

The device is used for eyes, and it softens the hardened tarsus by precisely controlling the heat of eyelids. At the same time, LipiFlow system exerts pulse pressure on eyelid to achieve massage effect, and gradually opens the blocked meibomian gland, thus restoring the balance of oil in tear film and relieving dry eye. Lipiflow takes about 12 minutes to treat each eye.

In a clinical study on the effectiveness of surgery, most patients (76%) reported that the symptoms of dry eye improved within two weeks, and they also felt the improvement of the quality and quantity of meibomian gland secretion and the duration of tear film. However, in some cases, it may take several months to achieve significant results. Generally speaking, the effect of LipiFlow can last for one to three years or more. The potential side effects of LipiFlow dry eye treatment include corneal abrasion, eye pain, eyelid swelling, eyelid irritation or inflammation, chalazion, temporary blurred vision, itching and red eye.

6. Intense pulsed light

Intense pulsed light (IPL) is a method to treat rosacea on skin and eyelids. Rosacea with blepharitis may lead to dry eye symptoms. IPL treatment controlled the related inflammation, and many patients were cured of dry eye at the same time. After treatment, they did not need to rely on artificial tears and other eye drops. Therefore, IPL therapy may be very suitable for patients with dry eye.

Patients usually need four to six intense pulsed light treatments, each with an interval of about one month. Usually, this treatment is well tolerated and patients do not need any additional rehabilitation treatment. But the dose of the received pulse needs to be confirmed by the doctor.

7. Nutrition therapy

Nutritional supplement through food can be used as part of the treatment of dry eye. Studies have found that foods containing omega-3 fatty acids can alleviate dry eye symptoms. The good food sources of omega-3 are mainly cold-water fish, such as salmon, sardines, herring and cod, and can also be obtained from linseed oil. In addition, drinking more water also helps dry eye. Mild dehydration usually aggravates dry eye symptoms, especially in hot, dry and windy weather. Simply drinking more water can sometimes relieve the symptoms of dry eye.

8. Improve daily living habits

If you have mild symptoms of dry eye, you can try several things to relieve the symptoms before seeing a doctor, or you can use them in your daily life to relieve dry eye.

Blink more frequently. When using computers, mobile phones or other digital devices, we often blink less than usual, which may lead to or aggravate dry eye. We should pay attention to this consciously and blink more frequently when using these electronic devices. In addition, blink completely as far as possible, gently squeeze your eyelids together and then open them, so that new tears can completely clean your eyes.

Always have a rest when using the computer. A better way is to look at objects with a diameter of at least half a meter at least once every 20 minutes, which is helpful to relieve dry eye and computer eye fatigue.

9, Chinese medicine eye care prescription

Traditional Chinese medicine eye protection mainly improves the direction of physical fitness by adjusting eye function.

"Chinese medicine believes that dry eye belongs to the category that water will dry up. How to treat it should be treated according to syndrome differentiation. One is dry eye caused by lung yin deficiency syndrome, which can cause dry and burning eyes, eye fatigue, decreased vision and other symptoms. The routine manifestation is red tongue with little coating. Treatment should be nourishing yin and expelling wind.

Traditional Chinese medicine theory is very suitable for the diagnosis and treatment of chronic diseases. Dry eye can also be treated by TCM syndrome differentiation, oral administration, external treatment and acupuncture. With the development of Chinese medicine theory for thousands of years, the syndrome differentiation, oral and external treatment of dry eye has become a self-contained system.

10, completely remove makeup.

Eyeliner and other eye cosmetics will block the meibomian gland at the root of eyelashes, leading to meibomian gland dysfunction and evaporative dry eye. All cosmetics on eyelids and eyelashes should be carefully removed.

Clean eyelids. When washing your face before going to bed, gently clean your eyelids to remove bacteria that may cause blepharitis and meibomian gland problems. Before going to bed, you can apply a warm and moist towel to your eyes for a minute or two, and then gently scrub your eyelids and eyelashes with mild toiletries (such as diluted baby shampoo).

Wear sunglasses. When you are outdoors in the daytime, always wear sunglasses that can block 100% ultraviolet rays. If they adopt a wrapped frame, they can protect their eyes from wind, dust and other irritants that may cause or worsen dry eye symptoms.
