There is also a kind of tooth deformity with a very high clinical proportion, which is often easily overlooked because of its inconspicuous characteristics, and that is deep overbite. (as shown in the figure below)
For deep overbite, teeth usually don't look messy, so many people don't think it is necessary to correct them.
But in fact, deep overbite is also a kind of tooth deformity, which will lead to serious tooth wear and even joint confusion over time.

What is deep overlap?
"Deep overbite" is a professional term in stomatology, also known as "deep occlusion", which is an abnormality of the vertical relationship between the maxillary and mandibular dental arches.
Generally speaking, it means that under normal occlusion, if the cutting edge of the upper anterior teeth exceeds the crown length of the lower anterior teeth 1/3, or the lower anterior teeth bite on the lingual side of the upper anterior teeth more than 1/3, it belongs to "deep overlap".
According to the degree of tooth overbite, deep overbite is divided into three degrees:
First-class degree
The crown of the upper anterior teeth covers more than 1/3 to 1/2 of the crown of the lower anterior teeth; Or the lower anterior teeth bite at the lingual incisors of the upper anterior teeth above 1/3 to 1/2.
Ⅱ degree
The crown length of the lower anterior teeth covered by the upper anterior teeth is more than 1/2 ~ 2/3; Or the lower anterior teeth bite at the lingual incisors of the upper anterior teeth above 1/2 (such as lingual protrusion).
Ⅲ degree
The crown of the upper anterior teeth completely covers the crown of the lower anterior teeth, even occluding the labial gingival tissue of the lower anterior teeth; Or the lower anterior teeth bite on the lingual gingival tissue or hard palate mucosa of the upper anterior teeth, thus causing traumatic gingivitis or mucosal injury.

What harm will deep overlap do to us?
Don't simply think that just covering the upper teeth with too many lower teeth will actually have a lot of adverse effects on our lives.
(1) Deep overbite is the most harmful to temporomandibular joint, especially closed deep overbite is a common malocclusion of temporomandibular joint disorder syndrome.
In this kind of people, the mandible is in the far middle position, the condyle moves backward, and the mandibular protrusive movement is seriously hindered. Temporomandibular joint disorder often occurs around the joint when chewing with the mouth open.
(2) Severe deep overbite, if the upper and lower teeth bite at the gingival margin of the opposite tooth neck, it is easy to cause traumatic ulcer.
At the same time, it will be more difficult to insert teeth when the teeth are missing in the elderly, which will bring strong discomfort to the body.
(3) Severe deep overbite will bite the maxillary gingiva during occlusion, causing pain, redness and swelling, which will be absorbed by the alveolar bone of the upper teeth, leading to periodontitis and other symptoms.
(4) Deep overbite will shorten the lower part and affect the appearance.
We often say that the facial features are beautiful, and the "golden line" of chin and lips is a standard to judge the facial features-the face that meets the golden line appears to have a more three-dimensional side face line.
However, many people's mouths are not convergent enough, and the whole side face will appear abrupt, partly because of the deep overlap.
Therefore, a short chin does not necessarily require cosmetic surgery. Check whether it is caused by occlusion first.
In addition, some deep overlapping is accompanied by the problem of gum exposure, that is, when laughing, the gums are exposed more, and under normal circumstances, the gums will not be exposed. Gum smile affects appearance more.

How to correct deep overlap?
Deep overbite correction is mainly to raise the occlusion of teeth, and recombine the facial skeleton position according to the patient's tooth condition and the ideal facial structure relationship and proportion designed in advance.
After deep adjustment, it can not only improve the aesthetics, but also improve the occlusal relationship of teeth, which is beneficial to the health of teeth and periodontal.
Before and during the correction, you can consciously remind yourself that in a relaxed state, your upper and lower lips are gently closed and your teeth should not touch as much as possible. Because you will feel very tired when you chew your teeth, relaxing your teeth properly can effectively protect your teeth.
In fact, adjusting the problem of "deep overlap" through orthodontic treatment is not only for the sake of long-term oral health, but also to eliminate the hidden dangers of serious oral diseases in the future, and at the same time, it can improve the facial contour and make it more harmonious and beautiful.
