But this couplet has a profound meaning, that is, it is worn sideways: "lifelong negligence"! Doing something and not doing something can achieve great things.

There is such a couplet in Lingyin Temple in Hangzhou: "How can life be complete? Everything is only half satisfactory. " The language of this couplet is simple and straightforward, but it contains profound philosophy. This kind of "semi-contented" life and carefree mentality is called "the most perfect life ideal discovered by China people" by Mr. Lin Yutang. "semi-satisfaction" is not helplessness and passivity, but an open-mindedness and wisdom; Since ancient times, life is the most taboo to be half poor, half rich and half stable; Half-life, half-day and half-meeting, half-taking, half-giving and half-doing; Half deaf, half dumb and half confused, half smart, half stupid and half wise; Half man, half me, half comfortable, half awake, half drunk and half immortal; Half-pro, half-love, half-bitter, half-vulgar, half-Zen and half-life; Life is half mine, and the other half depends on nature.

This pair of couplets has something in common with the above "semi-satisfaction", that is, the language is simple and straightforward, but there is a profound truth: you don't know how shallow your knowledge is until you open the book, and you don't know how profound your predecessors' accomplishments are until you copy the tablet. A "bosom friend" is not enough. A "know yourself" is superb. Let's find our own gap, which is modest!
Human knowledge is vast, and what they have learned is just a drop in the ocean. If you want to improve your cultural quality, you can only read more books, study more and study more. Calligraphy is the quintessence of China, extensive and profound. If you want to improve your calligraphy level, you can only learn more from the inscriptions of the sages, learn more from the brush and ink of famous artists, and seek innovation, development and improvement in inheritance, so that you can write freely!
I once had a motto to learn calligraphy and painting: "Books are close to Dharma, and painters are natural." Calligraphy sages and celebrities abound, which is a treasure house that can never be learned; The vast nature has inexhaustible materials and is an inexhaustible source. That's one thing.
In other words, there is no end to learning and no end to art!
Fourth, the house is connected to the lake, and the windows are near the flowers and the piano.
The literal meaning of this couplet is easy to understand, which means that your study or living room is adjacent to the lake, and the pen and ink will always be moist, close to flowers, trees, pianos and books, and the window will be full of fragrance. But "the house is connected with the lake" and "the window is close to the shade of flowers" just shows that there is a very elegant external environment here. Your pen and ink are moist, and your piano and book are not fragrant, which is another matter! This is the dialectical relationship between internal and external causes. External factors are necessary objective conditions, while internal factors are subjective factors. Only by persistently touching the pool water and waving your hands can you write beautiful words and draw beautiful pictures; Only by playing persistently and studying hard can we play beautiful music and enrich our knowledge. If you don't work hard subjectively, no matter how good the conditions are, everything is zero.
