The preface of the poem explains the process of writing the poem: "In the mid-autumn of the year bingchen, I got drunk after drinking for a long time. I wrote this piece, and also remembered Ziyu." Su Shi, because of his political differences with Wang Anshi and others who were in power to change the law, sought to be expatriated, and moved from place to place as an official.
He once asked to be transferred to a place closer to Su Zhe in order to have more meetings with his brother. In 1074 A.D. (the seventh year of Xining), Su Shi was sent to Mizhou. After arriving in Mizhou, this wish still could not be realized. In the mid-autumn of 1076 A.D., the moon was shining in the sky, and the silver glow was all over the place, and the lyricist had not been reunited with his younger brother Su Zhe for seven years after they parted ways.
