This poem was written during the mid-autumn festival in the year of 1076 A.D. (9th year of the Song Emperor Xining). It was written when the author was in Mizhou. The preface before the poem explains the process of writing the poem: "In the mid-autumn of the year bingchen, I was drunk for a long time. I wrote this piece, and also remembered Ziyu." Su Shi, because of his political differences with Wang Anshi and others who were in power to change the law, sought to be expatriated, and moved from place to place as an official.
He once asked to be transferred to a place closer to Su Zhe in order to have more meetings with his brother. In 1074 A.D. (the seventh year of Xining), Su Shi was sent to Mizhou. After arriving in Mizhou, this wish still could not be realized.
