Introduction to Sisters

Chinese feature film (black and white). . Adapted by Zheng Zhengqiu from his own stage play The Nobleman and the Prisoner, directed by Zheng Zhengqiu and photographed by Dong Keyi, with Hu Die, Zheng Xiaoqiu and Xuan Jinglin in the main cast. The movie reflects the social conditions of the 1930s in China through the different fates and encounters of twin sisters Dabao and Erbao. The movie has a tendency of social criticism and shows certain limitations of the author. On the one hand, it exposes and criticizes the social injustice; on the other hand, it reflects the fantasy mood of conciliationism, especially the happy ending which weakens its critical nature. The movie is highly dramatic, and Hu Die is very successful in playing two very different characters, Dabao and Erbao, at the same time. After the movie was released, it set a box office record of 60 consecutive days. There is also a 1952 version of the movie.
