Henan Road: The Past and Present of Qingdao's Old Financial Street

Qingdao is not old, but there are many old streets.

If you look at the dusty past of Henan Road, you will find that it was initially known as Financial Street. Once upon a time, Henan Road was like an auxiliary street of Zhongshan, hidden in obscurity behind that bustling old commercial street, unknown to the public. With the transformation of Zhongshan Road into a pedestrian street, 2, 5 trams dragged a long braid into the Henan Road, and a large number of foreign trade stores have made this place to become a favorite foreign trade goods of the people of the island must shop, this familiar and unfamiliar road, and began to attract people's attention.

The old city north-south road in the waterfront are "on the scene", Henan Road, the southern end of the waterfront "on the scene" is a spire bungalow, which is a seawater extraction of Qingdao, below the pipeline to the sea, inhaled water trucks are used to wash the road, the spire bungalow has a hundred years of history, became a major tourist attraction in the city. This is a century old and has become a scene in the coastal landscape.

Henan Road, from Taiping Road in the south to Jinan Road in the north, is completely parallel to Zhongshan Road, which was once divided into two districts, as was Zhongshan Road. The German colonial regime divided Qingdao district, where Europeans lived, and Bao Dao district, where Chinese lived, with Dexian Road and Baoding Road as district boundaries. So the southern section was originally named Hamburg Street after the famous German city of Hamburg, and was called Fukama Town during the Japanese occupation, and the northern section was called Henan Street and Henan Town from the beginning, and when China took back Qingdao, the whole street was called Henan Road.

There used to be many money changers and banks on Henan Road. In old China, banks with little capital could only be called "Qianzhuang" or "Yinshao". Henan Road 13 is the private China Industrial Bank, set up a branch in Qingdao in July 1930, moved here in 1932. 1935 financial crisis, a run on the phenomenon, in the Bank of Communications support to tide over the difficult times, became a joint bank of the government and the business sector, the manager of the Kongxiang Mian is the seventy-fifth generation of the grandson of Confucius. After liberation, the original site as the People's Bank of China, the business hall was used as "Qingdao Gold Shop", operating gold and silver jewelry, gold and silver coins.

Henan Road, No. 13, the former site of the Industrial Bank of China, for the European-style building, built in 1934, the beginning of the Industrial Bank of China Qingdao Branch. Designed by architect Xu Shouzhong.

China Industrial Bank, the Republic of 4 years (1915) by the Ministry of Finance of the Beiyang Government, to the Republic of 8 years in April formally established. The main promoters of the former Bank of China President Li Shiwei, former Finance Minister Zhou Xuexi, former State Premier Xiong Xiling, Qian Nengxun and others. The total capital was set at 20 million yuan, 50/50 commercial and public shares, with 10 million yuan of public shares held by the Bank of China and 10 million yuan of commercial shares recruited from the community. However, the paid-in capital at the time of opening was only more than 2 million yuan, which was mainly allocated by the Bank of China. The head office was located in Tianjin, moved to Shanghai in the 21st year of the Republic of China, changed to the General Administration Office.

The building was designed by Qingdao Lianyi Jianye Hua Xing, architect Xu Shouzhong, Shentai construction plant workers. Covering an area of 1837.33 square meters, building area of 3370.47 square meters. Steel and wood structure. The original three floors above ground, the mid-1980s to build a layer, now four floors, with a basement.

The front door faces west, square granite masonry base wall, the door on both sides of the thread-shaped and net buckle-shaped wall stone columns, arched stone carving flower decorations inlaid with the door cover, embossed flowers copper door, arch and arch windows on both sides of the granite stone columns attached. The first floor of the threaded stone columns embedded in the window, the second floor is a rectangular stone decorative line set of windows. The whole building is of simple classical style.

In 1934, the Qingdao branch of the Industrial Bank of China was moved to the building from Guantao Road, and in February 1937, the bank was closed down. 1938, the bank was reopened, and was barely able to maintain itself under the control of the Japanese bank. After the liberation of Qingdao, in December 1952, it joined the Qingdao branch of the public-private partnership bank. The building is now the People's Bank of China Qingdao City Center Branch business premises.

No.15 Henan Road, the former site of Qingdao Bank Association, built in August 1934, the architectural style is very similar to that of No.13 Henan Road, designed by the famous designer Xu Yao and constructed by Huafeng Heng. The former site of Qingdao Bank Association has an area of 1,582.76 square meters, with a European classical style. It has four floors above ground, concrete structure, square granite base and wall. The fa?ade adopts a symmetrical approach, with rectangular windows arranged in groups. There are four windows in the center and two windows on each side. The whole building gives people a simple and solemn feeling.

Qingdao Banking Association was founded on March 3, 1931, the member banks are China, transportation, mainland, Zhonglu, China Industrial, ShanZuo, Shanghai, MingHua eight. The first committee elected the Bank of China manager Wang Zu Xun as chairman of the committee, the address is temporarily set up in the Bank of China, while in the Henan Road to build a building, the completion of the move to the new site.

No. 15 Henan Road is the China Industrial and Mining Bank, the manager of the Yu Mozhang, operating deposits, lending, exchange, with warehouses.

This is a Renaissance-style building, granite corridors, on the "Δ"-shaped eaves, the middle of a clock tower, is the most moving building on Henan Road, after liberation, was used as a people's hospital in Shinan District, is now the Qingdao City Commercial Bank. Jincheng Bank on Henan Road, the old Chinese bank with little money can only be called "money bank" "silver".

The Jincheng Bank was designed by Chinese architect Lu Qianshou, the bank's plan is nearly L-shaped, three floors above ground, one underground, the main entrance is topped by a towering imitation of the European 19th century town hall-style clock tower, that is, to form the center of the exaggerated composition, but also to play the role of the street's view. For a long time, this clock tower not only marked the intersection, but also formed an organic link with the clock towers of the former police station and local court. The yellow and gray reinforced concrete building was designed only on April 27, 1934, and completed on Sept. 19, 1934, a speed of construction that should have been surprising at the time.

The building was later used as a people's hospital in the southern part of the city. Nowadays, the building has been occupied by a number of stores, with the front and west side turned into a community health center and the east side into a foreign trade clothing store. And in this beautiful old building on the roof of the building built a lot of temporary housing, I do not know whether these temporary construction will permanently become part of the old building.

There is a small square at the junction of Henan Road with Dagu Road and Baoding Road, which was the demarcation line between the Qingdao district, where the Germans lived, and the Bao-dao district, where the Chinese lived, during the German occupation. This junction was once the Qingdao Public **** Bus Terminal and also the Public **** Carriage Terminal, from which one went to Huiquan and Dongzhen.

No. 36 Henan Road is the Zhongyong Silver, manager Wang Chunyi;

No. 38 Henan Road seems to be very common, however, once you enter, you will find that it has a very unique circular wooden staircase: the two sides of the promenade each have a wooden staircase leading straight to the upper floors, which converge at the top of the promenade, ascend to the second floor and then separate again to the middle of the second floor and the third floor, and converge ...... The staircase goes up in a circular pattern to the rooftop. Such a staircase design is extremely rare in old houses.

After the transformation of time and baptism, Henan Road, No. 40, Qingdao Xiejutai original site is still "alive", Qingdao is still not much of the old branch of the port of Qingdao's old money changers old site. As a foreign money to Qingdao to open a money bank branch, "fishing" Qingdao money Xiejutai money bank, the original site is a street with 40, 50 meters long two-story door old building, in the year is also very grand.

Xiejutai money gate is arched, inside the Qingdao style of the 30s of the last century, in the courtyard. Now in the yard, the old staircase and wooden structure decoration is relatively complete, and the private building of the hut, cobweb like pulling messy line, has been the slightest bit to see this place was once a money changer.

No. 51 Henan Road is the Qingdao Commercial Bank, manager Ji Yichen; No. 88 Henan Road is the Tiancheng Bank, manager Zhang Shuxing.

According to the Qingdao Municipal Archives, located in the center of the street between Zhongshan Road, Qufu Road, Henan Road, Feicheng Road, there was a relatively square piece of street park - Qingdao Fourth Park, built in 1922 (the period of Japan's first invasion), covering an area of 5500 square meters. At one time, Henan Road, can be described as Qingdao's food street, Lu Cuisine Restaurant, Halal Cuisine Restaurant, Henan Cuisine Restaurant, everything. In the 1920s and 1930s, Qingdao's more established restaurants were divided into one and two classes, with different prices for food. According to the Qingdao Guidebook published in 1933, on Henan Road, there were first-class restaurants Yadong Restaurant (No. 58, Henan Road) and Houdefu (No. 19, Henan Road); and second-class restaurants Tongchunlou, Deshunlou and Xinshenglou. In addition, there are also specialty restaurants such as Zhenyizhai and Caigenxiang.

Mr. Lu Hai recorded in Old Street Stories that Yadong Hotel was the second largest Chinese restaurant in Qingdao after Jufulou, with a lobby on the first floor and elegant seats on the second floor, where many rich and noble families got married and celebrated their birthdays, which is no longer in existence today.

"Caigenxiang" is the largest vegetarian restaurant in Qingdao, Buddhist believers often come to visit, ordinary customers with its light taste, clean food also often come. When Master Hong Yi came to Qingdao and taught "law" at Zhanshan Temple, Qingdao Mayor Shen Honglie, who was famous for his work, hosted a banquet at Caigenxiang and sent an invitation, but Hong Yi refused, which was a big news at that time.

Zhenyizhai is a halal restaurant on Henan Road, two-story building, in 1929, the mayor of Qingdao, Ma Fuxiang, is a Muslim, often hosted banquets here, making it famous, but it closed down during the fall.

Houdefu is a Henan cuisine restaurant, which can be found in every major city in the country, and Qingdao's store happens to be on Henan Road, with specialties such as "tile fish". It is said that Liang Shiqiu was one of the shareholders, but it was found that his father was a shareholder of Houdefu in Beijing, and he often entertained his friends at Houdefu, and when Hu Shi came to Qingdao, Liang Shiqiu entertained him here.

The hotels on Henan Road are divided into Chinese and Japanese. The Japanese-style hotels are equipped with tatami mats according to Japanese custom. Chinese-style hotels are Dachang Hotel, North China Inn, Gao Sheng Inn, etc., are traditional Chinese inn-style hotels. There is a Japanese-style hotel called "my wife," which means my wife, and one called Yamato Inn, which is the largest Japanese-style hotel (at the Qufu intersection).

Qingdao's confectionery industry is also divided into Chinese and Japanese. Chinese dim sum industry famous store is Wanfulin, the head office in Henan Road, nearly two hundred employees, the city's first. For a long time, when Qingdao people gave gifts, if it was a pastry, Wan Fulin's dim sum was the first choice, and if you didn't give Wan Fulin's, it was as if it didn't have enough class. The wrapping paper of Wanfulin confectionery is red background with gold stamping, a fine art "Fu" trademark or bat pattern, symbolizing "Fu". According to records, in 1947, Wan Fulin sold more than 70,000 pounds of mid-autumn mooncakes alone, which was a large sales volume at the time.

To the north of Wanfulin, there is a bookstore, Yunge, which is small in size but distinctive, mainly dealing with popular novels, including three categories: martial arts, romance and detective. On Henan Road, where the old Qingdao and Bao Dao districts meet, there was long a vacant lot (and still is), which used to be the Qingdao Public **** Bus Terminal, and the Public **** Carriage Terminal, from which you went to Huiquan and Dongzhen.

No.35-39 Henan Road is a very fine 3-storey Liyuan-style small building, with granite foundation, gray-yellow walls decorated with 4 different shapes of 8-petal flowers, and there are 3 kinds of flowers in a row at the connection of the first and second floors of the small building, while there is only 1 kind of flower at the connection of the second and third floors. On the street side of the small building there is a peculiar door, which is rectangular and made of iron, although it is worn out, and the flower decoration can still be seen vaguely on it. Above the door is a stone plaque, the writing on which is mottled. Some say it was once a famous restaurant, while others say it was an inn in the old days,

No. 80 Henan Road, the site of Donglai Bank, was originally located at the Tianjin intersection on Henan Road. Although it is not as flashy as the one built at 39 Hunan Road, it is one of the most elegant old buildings in the northern part of Henan Road.

The building is four stories high, granite foundation, the entire building facade decorative square columns and walls are given to the heavy granite package, as if a layer of armor worn on the body of the building. The top of the mountain wall has a pattern of decoration, a closer look at the top of the square columns, there are also small latticework flower decoration. Into the interior of the building, which has a square patio, looking up, each level of the fence is stone, each section of the fence has 8 such as gourd-shaped stone decoration is very beautiful.

Through the gate and corridor, you enter the patio, which is not big, and unlike the wooden fence on the second floor of many Riyatas, the second floor here has wooden windows instead of a fence. Some information shows that this was a silver company called "Tiancheng", the manager Zhang Shuxing.

The old Qingdao, the heart of the old city, there is a road, named after the German capital Berlin, called Berlin Street, also once called Mabu Town, now called Qufu Road. Although this road is in the heart of the city, it is not obvious.

Qufu Road starts from Dexian Road in the east through Zhongshan Road to Xintai Road. The easternmost point is the early Catholic Church. 1910 published in the book "Qingdao" describes: "The Catholic Church, a beautiful building, located in the Governor's Office handed over to the Church of an area of 30,000 square meters of land, 1899-1902 was built, and is now being used by churches and schools. This church, like all the Catholic churches in Lunen, is subordinate to the Archbishop of the Church of Steyr. Every Sunday, services are held for the troops and the civilian orders." In 1934, after the completion of St. Michael's Cathedral, it became the auditorium of the Mingde School.

Xu Shichang, the governor of the three eastern provinces and minister of military affairs at the end of the Qing Dynasty, bought land and built a house on Berlin Street in 1912. Later, Yuan Shikai sent three times to Qingdao to ask him to go to Beijing as Secretary of State, and after Yuan Shikai's death, he served as President of the Republic of China.

Xu Shichang house diagonally across the Xunqing veteran Zhang Shihang, who once visited Laoshan with Xu Shichang, Xu Shichang wrote an inscription engraved on the cliff wall, which still exists next to the road to Taiqing Palace, which reads: "Kui Chou (1913) April Xin Chou, about Suzhou Wu Yusheng, Guangzhou Li Jiaju tour of Laoshan, the same tourists in Hexian Yu Shimei, Li Jingmei, Zhang Shihang, stayed at Huayan An, tomorrow to Taiqing Palace, and tomorrow to the first day of the day. An, tomorrow to Taiqing Palace, negative gorge letter sea, pine and stone strange ancient ...... round trip for three days." His courtyard has a stone tablet, on the Qing Dynasty scholar Yu Yue title "Bamboo Residence reading place", now standing in Zhongshan Park, next to the bamboo forest, is a Qingdao cultural relics.

Zhang Shihang House was later opened as a Yingzhou Inn, with few rooms but good facilities and a traditional Chinese garden. It was close to the Yongan Theater, as was the Asia Inn, and there were many famous actors and actresses who had lived here, including Cheng Yanqiu, Li Wanchun, Bai Yuwei, Ma Lianliang, Tan Fuying, and Qiu Shengrong. One of the four great dancers, Shang Xiaoyun, lived in Yingzhou Hotel several times, and in 1950, he also led his three sons, Changchun, Changlin and Changrong, to live here together. At that time, Changrong was still young, and Shang Xiaoyun invited Chen Furui, a famous Peking Opera performer who was living in Qingdao, to be his teacher, and Shang Changrong began his artistic career from that time onwards. Now Yingzhou Hotel has been demolished, the original site built on the Qingdao Hotel Hotel Department.

Opposite it is the Taixin Candy Factory, built in 1932, which produces chocolates and other hard and soft candies. The store serves coffee and pastries, with more than 30 seats, and produces and sells all kinds of ice cream in summer.

Next to the Tyson Candy Factory is the Adams Building, where Adams was an American businessman and former president of the American Chamber of Commerce. This building, also known as the Texaco Building, was an early office building in Qingdao with an elevator. After the liberation, it was changed to the First Department Store, and the main entrance was changed to Zhongshan Road, which was the first state-run large-scale department store in Qingdao.

Today's Qufu Road West

Qufu Road from Zhongshan Road to Henan intersection was the fourth park, in 1932, the then municipal government sold all the land of the park, built for the Qingdao financial district, known as the Qingdao Wall Street, where there are the Bank of China, Bank of Shanzuo, the Shanghai Commercial Bank, the Continental Bank, the Bank of Jincheng, the Industrial and Mining Bank of China, the Industrial Bank of China, and Qingdao Bankers' Association. The Qingdao Bankers Association is also located here. The exterior walls of these buildings are all made of granite, a specialty of Qingdao, but limited to the municipal regulations at the time, the building's floors are not more than three stories, but the banks have different designs, each showing their style. After the liberation, the private banks were reorganized into public-private partnership banks. Industrial Bank, Industrial and Mining Bank of the old site became the People's Bank of Qingdao Branch site, in the original three-story basis for an additional layer. The former Bank of China, Shanzuo Bank, Shanghai Bank, the old site of the China Travel Service remodeled for the Bank of China's business hall.

Qingdao had a lot of ballroom, Qufu Road Garden Ballroom is a larger one, by the side of Zhongshan Road for the ballroom, by the side of Qufu Road for the coffee room. In the past, the ballroom dance ticket system, to the ballroom men first buy dance tickets, dancers sit in two rows next to the band, dance music, men went to choose their favorite dancers, a dance, to give the dancers a dance ticket, some men will give "hold" the dancers two or several dance tickets.

After the liberation, the ballroom was canceled, the original site as the Finance and Trade Employees Club, in the 1950s the coffee room was converted into a library, the ballroom is still a ballroom, but no more dancers, men bring their own partners or choose the ladies present, just enter the club to buy a ticket. "During the Cultural Revolution, the club was smashed and criticized, and in the 1980s it was restored as a dance hall, belonging to the Workers' Club of Shinan. Now the land on this side of Qufu Road has been built into the Parkson commercial building.
