Grave of Fireflies is a Japanese animated film directed by Gao Tianxun and starring Tatsumi Nu and Shiraishi Ling Nai.
The film tells the story of Kobe in the late World War II. After losing his mother in an air raid, his brother Qing Tai and his 4-year-old sister Jie Zi, who were adopted by relatives, lived in a cave far away from the crowd under the rule of a temporary regiment (an institution set up to rule the people during World War II), but gradually died because they could not get help from adults.
A boy in rags, dying in a crowded station, is slowly approaching the end of his short life 14 years old. This is Japan after more than a month of defeat.
The air raid started and my mother died in the bombing. In the face of a sudden blow, all my brother can do is hide the news of my mother's death from my sister. In the empty square, my brother smiled and tried to perform the horizontal bar for my sister who was crying for her mother. In the sunset, two thin figures look so thin. Perhaps, at that moment, my brother tried to bear all his sadness and decided to hold up a clear sky for his sister on the chaotic ruins.
Brothers and sisters can only go to relatives' homes. However, war has alienated family ties, and material poverty has made people indifferent to each other. Dirty eyes and less and less rice in the bowl suggest that they must leave. My brother finally decided to move away with my sister and set up his own home. However, when he left happily singing, could he have predicted the irreversible tragic fate because of the war?
In order not to let my sister starve, my brother had to risk his life to steal it when the plane bombed. Whenever someone finds some food in an empty room, he gets very excited.
In the dark abandoned cave, my brother caught fireflies into mosquito nets, and the fireflies flying all over the sky were clearly extinguished on a sultry summer night. My brother clung to his sleeping sister for fear that he would lose it if he let go.
