Liu Yuxi, a writer in the Tang Dynasty, wrote in the original text of Wang Dongting:
The lake and the moon set each other off, and there is no wind mirror on the pool surface.
Looking at Dongting from a distance, there is a green snail in the silver plate.
Translation:
On Dongting Lake, moonlight and water blend together, and the lake is as calm as an unpolished bronze mirror. Looking at Dongting Lake from a distance, the landscape is as green as ink, like a green snail in a silver plate.

Creation background
Wang Dongting was written in the autumn of 824, the fourth year of Changqing. In 20 years, Liu Yuxi was exiled to the south and went to Dongting. According to the literature, it can be tested about six times. Among them, only the state is transferred, this time, in autumn. And this poem is a vivid record of this trip.
Poetry appreciation
This is a landscape poem written by the poet overlooking Dongting Lake. The first sentence is about the blending of water, light and moonlight, which shows the breadth and distance of the lake. This should be the scene at dusk. It is not dark yet, but the moon has come out. If it is dark, you can't see the fusion of the two colors.
The second sentence uses the metaphor of a mirror to show the calm of the lake at night, because the sun has set and the lake is not reflective, just like a mirror is dull without polishing. The third sentence is about the green of Junshan Mountain in Wangyuan Lake. The "landscape" here actually refers to the mountain, that is, Junshan in the lake. The fourth sentence uses another metaphor, comparing Junshan floating in the water to a green snail on a silver plate.
The whole poem is full of pure scenery, with detailed descriptions and vivid metaphors, which is very interesting to read.
Brief introduction of the author
Liu Yuxi, whose real name is Meng De, was a famous poet in the middle Tang Dynasty (later generations respectfully called him "the great poet") and a writer. Liu Yuxi can not only write poems, but also write articles and understand philosophy. No matter compared with Liu Zongyuan and Bai Juyi of his time, he is not inferior to Wei's.
Famous articles include Humble Room Inscription and Ode to Autumn Sound. Well-known poems include Wang Dongting and Zhuzhi Ci, and philosophical works include Tian Lun, who was an early materialist.
Liu Yuxi is a born optimist. His life has ups and downs, ups and downs, but he has never been discouraged. When he was proud, he was the emperor's favorite and served in the highest power department; When I was lonely, I was successively demoted as far away as Guangdong.
In his famous essay "Humble Room Inscription", there is the best testimony to his good mentality, that is, Liu Yuxi was demoted as a county magistrate because he actively participated in Wang's "Yongzhen Reform" (resolutely opposed to eunuch intervention in politics and separatist regime).
By convention, the average judge should live in a three-bedroom apartment of the county government. As a result, local officials were ordered to make things difficult for him. First, let him live in a house by the river south of the city, facing the river and the water. Liu Meng was very happy, so he wrote a couplet ("Facing the river, watching the white sails, arguing about state affairs") and posted it at the door.
As a result, the magistrate was very angry and asked him to move to a small house by the river in the north of the city. Liu Mengde is still very happy because of the trees. With a stroke of his pen, he wrote a pair directly on the door ("weeping willows and green rivers, people are in the heart of the sun, in Beijing"). The magistrate of a county was even more angry when he knew it, and directly let him live in a small room in the county government. Liu Mengde was only angry when he found that someone had carved this "humble room inscription" on the big stone in front of the door to satirize the bad behavior of the magistrate of a county.
The fate between Liu Yuxi and Dongting Lake is really deep. He has been to Dongting Lake at least six times in 20 years and has special feelings for it. He knows everything there, so he can write such clever poems.
When Liu Yuxi was a secretariat in Suzhou, his boss Shen Li invited him to drink, and kabuki entertained him during the dinner. Liu Yuxi took a fancy to a dancer (the legendary Du Weiniang). During the dinner, Liu Yuxi immediately wrote a poem "To Li's Prostitute" for the beautiful woman at the poetry creation meeting. After knowing this, Shen Lide generously gave his Maggie to Liu Yuxi, fulfilling them, which was also a much-told story for a while.
