The Night of the Ten Thousand Lanterns (万家灯火闹元宵)

No Night City

No Night City is a 122-minute drama film co-produced and distributed by Asmik Ace and Toei Pictures in Japan. It was released on June 27, 1998 in Japan, directed by Chih-Yi Lee and starring Takeshi Kaneshiro, Mirai Yamamoto, Kouhei Shiina, Hung Lang, and Eric Tsang.

Adapted from the novel of the same name written by Chi-Sing Chou, the film follows the darkness and insanity of a Chinese-Japanese mixed-race yakuza who struggles to survive at his most desperate.

Written by Chi-Sing-Chou and shot by Lee Chi-Yi, "City of Night" is a highly realistic recreation of the noirish world of Kabukicho. The emotional entanglements in "City of Night" are so wonderful that the audience will probably focus on the "desperate" relationship between Natsumi and Kenichi, ignoring the fact that the whole story is actually about "Shinjuku". In the brutal night of Shinjuku, everything matters but love.
