Fronteaux) and the Hunchback of Notre Dame's bell-ringer (Quasimodo), who was raised by the Vicar General (Claude Fronteaux). [edit] Outline On April Fools' Day in Paris in 1482, the hunchback of Notre Dame, Quasimodo, was chosen as the King of Fools because he was the ugliest-looking man in all of Paris. He was elected to the throne by the crowd and paraded throughout the city. Gangois, a poor, downtrodden poet, presented a religious satire on April Fools' Day, but the audience only watched the parade and not his play. In order to get food, the penniless Gamgoire follows a gypsy street dancer, La. Esmeralda and falls for her beauty. But when she comes around a corner, she is suddenly attacked by Quasimodo and Frono, the vice-regent of Notre Dame. Gangowa tries to save her but is knocked down by Gazimodo, while Forono escapes. Fabi, the captain of the royal archery team, arrives in time and captures Gazimodo. Later that night, a group of beggars and thieves are about to hang Gamgoire, but Esmeralda appears and offers to marry him for four years, saving Gamgoire. The following day, Gazimodo was brought before a court and later sentenced to two hours of torture in the Piazza del Gueverre. He was humiliated physically and psychologically by grinding on a gibbet and being jeered at by the crowd. He begged for some water, but no one paid any attention to him until Esmeralda came forward and gave him some water. Seeing this, Sister Bhagat, a cloistered nun in the neighborhood, screamed that Esmeralda was a gypsy thief and blamed her for the kidnapping of her daughter fifteen years earlier. Two months later, Esmeralda is walking down the street when she is approached by Follech. Gondrosier and her friends from a balcony. Follech is a noble lady and Fabi's fiancée. She is jealous of Esmeralda's beauty and pretends not to see her, but her friends call Esmeralda in. When Esmeralda steps into the room, the ladies are immediately dwarfed. They were beautiful, but not as beautiful as Esmeralda. Realizing that Esmeralda is a knockout, the ladies turn to mocking her clothes. Phoebe tries to make Esmeralda feel better, but Fletcher takes her bag and opens it, dropping out boards with letters on them, which Esmeralda's lamb, Degary, spells "Phoebus". Frohike realizes that she has a rival in love and thinks that Esmeralda is a witch. When Esmeralda leaves, Phoebus follows her. Later that month, Esmeralda meets with Fabi and confesses her love to him. Fabi takes the opportunity to kiss her and pretends that he loves her too. Fabi had no intention of marrying her, which upset Esmeralda. Fabi pretended to be sad and said that Esmeralda would never love him again, but Esmeralda said that she truly loved him and would do anything for him. Fabi begins to undress her and kiss her again. Frono, who has been watching them from behind the door, bursts into the room in a jealous rage, stabs Fabi, and flees. Esmeralda faints and wakes up to find herself charged with murder, and because of some misunderstanding, the jury thinks Fabi is dead. Esmeralda proclaims her innocence, but is tortured to make her confess. Her feet are locked in iron boots that tighten and tighten, and unable to endure the pain, she confesses to being Fabi's murderer. The court sentences her to death for murder and the exercise of witchcraft (the court has seen the Scrabble trick of Degary the Lamb), and Esmeralda is locked in a single cell. Frono comes to visit her, but she hides in a corner. Vorono tells Esmeralda of his deep desire for her and gives her a final warning: give her to him or die. Esmeralda refuses him. Frono becomes insane and leaves the city afterward. The following day, minutes before Esmeralda is to be hanged, Quasimodo dramatically arrives from Notre Dame and takes Esmeralda away, shouting "sanctuary" as he runs back. While Esmeralda stays in Notre Dame, she slowly becomes friends with Quasimodo and sees past his deformed exterior to his interior. Quasimodo gives her a shrill sounding whistle, one of the things he can hear, and tells her to use it when she needs her help. One day Esmeralda notices Fabi walking through Notre Dame, and she tells Gazimodo to follow him, but instead Gazimodo sees Fabi leaving his fiancée's house. Quasimodo tells Fabi that Esmeralda is still alive, but Fabi believes Esmeralda is dead and tells Quasimodo to go away. Quasimodo goes back and says he can't find Fabi. Esmeralda and Quasimodo live peacefully for a few weeks, but Frono suddenly returns and is furious to see Esmeralda and Quasimodo getting along so well. He hides from them, and Frono spends a few days in a small room planning what to do next. One night, he opens Esmeralda's room with a master key. Esmeralda wakes up and is horrified when Vorono presses his body against hers and tries to rape her. Unable to resist Frollo, Esmeralda takes out a whistle and blows it desperately. By the time Frono realizes what she is doing, Quasimodo has lifted him up, thrown him violently against the wall, and beaten him with the force of a man who wants to kill him. As Gazimodo is about to beat him to death, Forono staggers into the moonlight coming in through the window. Quasimodo is shocked to discover that it was he who attacked Esmeralda. Frono is extremely angry, and before leaving Notre Dame, he tells Esmeralda that if he can't have her, neither can anyone else. Forono seeks out Gangowa and lies to him, stating that the Council will command soldiers to force their way into Notre Dame to take Esmeralda away. Believing that he can save Esmeralda, Gangova hatches a plan with Forono. One night, Gamboa leads the Parisian gypsies to Notre Dame to rescue Esmeralda. Thinking that they were going to capture Esmeralda, Quasimodo used the defenses of Notre Dame to fight back against the Gypsies. When the king's advisors see the engagement at Notre Dame, the council votes to remove Esmeralda from the sanctuary. At the same time, Quasimodo realized that he was already going to win, but the King's Archers came to Notre Dame to help. The archery team clears the streets of the Gypsies. Quasimodo runs to Esmeralda's room to find her, but realizes with trepidation that she is nowhere to be found. During the attack, Gangowa and a stranger in a cloak sneak into Notre Dame to find Esmeralda and try to take her away quietly. (Esmeralda hears the sounds of the attack and fears the soldiers will take her.) When Gangowa says he will save her, Esmeralda agrees to leave with the two men. They take a small boat and row to the Xena River, and when Esmeralda hears people keep saying that she is going to die, she passes out. When she wakes up, she realizes that Gangowa is gone and that the stranger is actually Frono. Frono gives her one more chance to choose: either stay with him or hand her over to the soldiers. Esmeralda chooses to be executed. Furious, Forono throws her to Sister Baguette. Baguette hates Gypsies and holds Esmeralda in her grip until the soldiers arrive. Moments before the soldiers arrive, they realize that Esmeralda is actually Baguette's lost child, but it is too late for Esmeralda to escape. Bhagat follows the guards to the gallows, kicking and biting along the way. One of the guards pushed her away, causing her to suffer a head wound and eventually die. On this side of Notre Dame, Quasimodo was still frantically searching for Esmeralda. He went to the top of the north tower where he found Forono. He sees Frono's frenzied face, and again, Garcimodo follows his gaze and sees Esmeralda in a white dress on the gallows. In his frenzy, Quasimodo hurls Forono violently from Notre Dame. Upon seeing La. Esmeralda hanged and the remains of Forono, Quasimodo cries out, "There is everything I ever loved!" (There is everything I ever loved!) From then on, Quasimodo is never seen again.
