Controversies surrounding Barbie

Barbie's popularity has affirmed her influence on Western children, attracting a high degree of scrutiny, and much of her criticism is based on the assumption that children will look to Barbie as a role model and try to imitate her.

1: In September 2003, the Middle Eastern country of Saudi Arabia banned the sale of Barbie in the country, arguing that Barbie was incompatible with Islamic thought. The Commission's Vice President for Breeding and Prevention said: "The revealing clothing and shameful poses of the Jewish Barbie doll, the costume is a symbol of Western depravity. We should be aware of her dangers and be careful."

2: In Middle Eastern countries there is a doll called Flora, Flora dolls are similar to Barbie but designed to cater to the Islamic market, and she is not produced by Metalor. In Iran, outside of Barbie, there are Sara and Dara dolls to choose from.

3: "Barbie" became a pejorative slang term for a stupid woman, most famously in the song "Barbie Girl." In 1992, Mattel produced talking Barbie, a line of dolls that knew how to say sentences such as: "Are we going to have enough clothes or not?" "I love shopping!" and "Want a pizza party?" . Each doll was set to speak four of the two hundred and seventy sentences, so no two dolls should be alike. Although only 1.5 percent of the dolls said, "Math class is difficult! ", it drew criticism from the American Association of University (Graduate) Women (AAUW). In October 1992, Mattel announced that Teen Conversation Barbie would not say this sentence again, and offered a replacement to those who owned the doll.

4: Barbie's Waistline One of the most widespread criticisms of Barbie is that she promotes an unrealistic image of the female body, which leads to anorexia in women who imitate Barbie. The criticism states that for a woman to have Barbie's body, she would need to be 7 feet 2 inches tall, weigh 115 to 130 pounds, have a hip circumference of 30 to 36 inches, a waist circumference of 18 to 23 inches, and a bust circumference of 38 to 48 inches. At the same time, she would lack 17 to 22 percent of the fat sufficient to maintain menstruation. After Barbie was redesigned in 1997 with an increased waist circumference, Metalor said the change would make Barbie more appropriate when wearing modern fashion designs.

5: "Colored Francie" First produced in 1967, she is sometimes described as the first African-American Barbie. However, she was made in the molds of the Caucasian Francie dolls, and did not have the correct racial appearance other than dark skin.Christie, who debuted in 1968, is often considered the first African-American doll in the Barbie line. Black Barbie and Latino-American Barbie began to be marketed in 1980.

6: In 1997, Mattel partnered with Nabisco to co-market Barbie and Oreo Cookies. Oreo Fun Barbie was marketed as a doll that little girls could play with after school and share with her as "America's Favorite Cookie", and Mattel followed the usual practice of releasing white and black versions of the doll. Criticisms have been leveled at the African-American community. Critics say that in the African-American community, Oreo is a derogatory name for someone who resembles the cookie: black on the outside but white on the inside. The doll was unsuccessful in the marketplace, and Mattel's retrieval of unsold stock piqued the interest of collectors.

7: In May 1997, Mattel introduced Share a Smile Becky, a doll in a pink wheelchair; Kjersti Johnson, a seventeen-year-old high school student with cerebral palsy in Tacoma, Washington, pointed out that the doll could not fit into the elevator in the Barbie dollhouse, and Mattel announced that the dollhouse would be redesigned in the future to accommodate the doll.

8: In December 2005, Dr. Agnes Nairn of the University of Bath in the United Kingdom published a study suggesting that girls usually go through a Barbie-hating phase, where they are treated with different punishments, including decapitation and putting the doll in the microwave. He said that denying Barbie is like a ritual of denying one's past.

"Barbie" was born

Ruth Handler is the world's most popular toy marketer. Ruth Handler is the creator of the world's longest-selling toy on the toy market - "Barbie", and later founded Mattel Toys, is one of the most successful female entrepreneurs in the United States. Now, "Barbie" dolls have been sold to more than 150 countries around the world, total sales of more than 1 billion dollars.

April 28, 2002, the major newspapers and magazines have forwarded a shocking news: Barbie's creator, 85-year-old Ruth? Ms. Handler died. For half a century, the Barbie doll created by Ruth has become the beloved of little girls almost all over the world. With this big-eyed, long-haired doll's best-selling, today's "Barbie" is not just a toy, it is a symbol of the American woman, a symbol of American culture, just as McDonald's and KFC around the world. As the creation of this brand Ruth, she used her life's work, giving women around the world to dream and hope.

In 1916, Ruth? Handler was born in Denver, the capital of Colorado, USA. Her parents were originally from Poland, and like countless other immigrants who came to America to pursue their dreams, they traveled across the ocean on a hot, dirty steamship to escape military service.

Ruth's father was a blacksmith who lived on a meager income to support Ruth and her nine sisters. Her mother worked hard for the family all day long, but the hardships of life didn't seem to bring much harm to the large family, and her father and mother never lost their temper with the children. Later Ruth? Handler once recalled that as the youngest child, she never lacked for favor while growing up. And it is because of growing up in so much love, she will have a child's heart, design the lovely "Barbie".

At the age of 19, Ruth was just a sophomore in college. She was small but full of curiosity, and out of curiosity about movies, she came to Hollywood alone, but she came to this place full of temptation, not to be a movie star, but to study industrial design, and luckily, she found a job on the famous Paramount set. It was here that she met the love of her life, Elliot? Handler, and they quickly fell in love and married shortly afterward.

In 1942, the hesitant Mr. and Mrs. Handler started their company in a garage, initially with wooden picture frames, with Elliott developing samples and Ruth selling them.

On a whim, Handler tried making small pieces of furniture from the leftover scraps from the frames and found that they sold well, so the company added another business, designing and manufacturing furniture for children's playrooms. After a few years, the company began to make money, and the main business shifted to the production of toys. 1945, Mr. and Mrs. Handler and his friend, Mantelson, opened a company, which later became the most famous and successful production of cloth dolls. The company was named Mattel (MATTEL), MATT from Mantelson's name, and EL from Elliott's name.

At that time, Ruth already had a daughter, as a mother and a businessman making toys, she is very important to the idea of children. One day, out of the blue, she saw her daughter Barbara playing with a little boy with paper cut-out dolls, not the kind of baby babies that were common at the time, but teenagers with their own professions and identities, much to her daughter's fascination. "Why don't we make a more grown-up toy doll?" Ruth's mind exploded with inspiration.

Despite the inspiration, the journey to realization was arduous. Before the birth of Barbie, the U.S. market for little girls to play with toys are mostly cute cherubs, round, chubby, similar to the famous child star Xiu Lan? Deng Boer's screen image, this is the adult imagination of the children's toys, but from the interest of the big kids, this toy is slightly "childish", they need to play with their own age is similar to their friends, rather than a small baby.

What would you make your doll look like? Ruth pondered, just when she needed to travel to Europe, so Ruth came to Germany, where she saw a doll called "Lili", Lili is very beautiful, first produced in 1955, according to the "West German Times Bild" in a famous cartoon image production. Lili was made of hard plastic and stood 18-30 centimeters tall. Her long hair was tied in a ponytail trailing behind her head, and she wore a gorgeous dress. Body impeccable, all kinds of physical characteristics, and wearing very "exposed".

So, Ruth bought three "Lilly", brought back to the United States, she told her male colleagues in the company, she wanted to design a "mature" toys, but they think "Lilly" is too exposed. The company's newest product, the "Lilly", is a product of men's fantasies and is not suitable for children.

Ruth wasn't discouraged and thought, "Why can't I combine the two? Kids need a doll that's grown up, but not revealing. Little girls don't just need dolls that look like their age, they need an ideal image of what she will look like when she grows up. And so the idea of "Barbie" became more and more mature in Ruth's mind. With the help of the company's technicians and engineers, Barbie was born!

With a woman's care, then Ruth asked the costume designer Charlotte Johnson to design Barbie's clothes. In 1958, they were granted a patent to produce Barbie. This doll would change an era. She was unlike any doll ever made. She was a grown-up, with slender, fresh limbs, and although she had a great figure, she was tightly wrapped in beautiful clothes, and her face showed the mystery of Marilyn Monroe, although she was only 11 years old. Monroe-like mystery, though only 11.5 inches tall. Finally, Ruth gave the lovely doll the nickname "Barbie" for her daughter Barbara.

Growing up with "Barbie"

The first Barbie dolls were made in Japan and made their debut at the 1959 U.S. Toy Fair, where they were exhibited under the title "Barbie - Role Model for Girls". Barbie - A Role Model for Young Girls". But to Ruth's surprise, "Barbie" was not snapped up, but rather met with a cold reception from toy dealers. After all, she is a new thing, is a kind of adventure, the dealer is reluctant to do so, only reluctantly into a few.

But the market proved Ruth's judgment is correct, placed in the corner of the dealer's shelves "Barbie" by the children's warm welcome, more and more people began to buy this fresh and delightful toys, especially the little girl, this is extremely enthusiastic, the first year sold 350,000.

In 1960, the distributors had a complete change of heart, and orders were flying in to Mattel like snowflakes. It took several years for the company to satisfy the demand for Barbie, and in 10 years, the public bought Barbie to the tune of $500 million.

But while Barbie was widely welcomed by the public, it was also criticized from all sides. American women's organizations first said, Barbie is too "sexy", too "perfect", for the little girls set unattainable goals, the end result is to hurt their self-esteem, making them feel inferior to their own looks and body, so she is not a symbol of women's liberation, but rather a symbol of women's liberation. Instead of being a symbol of women's liberation, she acts as a "persecutor of women". But Ruth does not think so. Barbie is a girl's idol, and idols are naturally perfect, and little girls do not feel inferior to their idols.

In order to prove that Barbie is not an empty-headed vase, but a working woman. Ruth designed more kinds of "Barbie", she has more identities, can be a doctor, astronauts, businesswomen, police officers, athletes, and even do UNICEF volunteers, so far, her occupation has been more than 80 kinds; she can be Chinese, Indians, blacks, and the nationalities she endorses have 45 kinds; her pets have now been more than 80 kinds; she can be Chinese, Indian, black, and she can be a woman. Her pets now number over 40, the first being a horse named "Dancer"; she has her own boyfriend, Ken, named after Ruth's son; and she has her own three sisters, Choppy, who was introduced in 1964, Chopper, who was introduced to the public in 1964, and Ruth, who was introduced to the public in 1964, and Chopper, who was introduced to the public in 1964, and Chopper, who is now a member of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). She also has three sisters, Choppy, who was introduced in 1964, Stacy, who was introduced in 1992, and Little Kelly, who was unveiled in 1995.

This is an ordinary toy, but so real that on the one hand she is incredibly beautiful, the "girl with a thousand faces", and on the other hand she is so close to us, because she has her own preferences, like any little girl.

Opposition will still be voiced, but as a marketing image, "Barbie" is so successful. According to Mattel, an 11-year-old American girl may own 10 Barbie dolls, while a French girl of the same age owns five. In addition to young children, Barbie is purchased by millions of adult women, "For them, no matter what age, she's not just a doll," says Ruth, "she's part of them." And Barbie's collectors are unisex: a Barbie doll priced at $3 in 1959 could be worth $5,000 now, if it's well preserved.

The first Barbie dolls were made in Japan and debuted at the 1959 U.S. Toy Fair under the title "Barbie - Role Model for Girls". The debut of Barbie slowly by the children's warm welcome, more and more people began to buy this doll, the first year on the sale of the first 350,000, in the next 10 years, the public to buy Barbie amounted to $ 500 million.

The development of Barbie

Rose Handler discovered that her daughter, Barbie, had been a child. Handler noticed that her daughter Barbara (Barbie for short) liked to play with paper dolls and preferred to play with toys that looked like adults rather than babies or children, at a time when most three-dimensional dolls appeared as babies or children. Rose realized that there was a market for adult dolls, so she proposed the Barbie idea to her husband, Alfred, one of the founders of Metalor, but Alfred and the other decision makers in the company were not very interested in the project. Rose Handler says, "I'm not sure what we're going to do with Barbie. Handler said, "Being able to have fun with a doll that has breasts is very important to a little girl's self-image."

In 1956, while traveling to Switzerland with Barbara and Kenneth, Rose found a German doll called the Bild Lilli doll in a store window in Lucerne. The adult figure coincided with Ruth Handler's idea of a doll, so she purchased three Bild Lilli dolls, one of which she gave to Barbara, and two of which she sent to Metalor. First introduced in Germany in 1955, the Lilli doll was originally aimed at adults, but later became popular with children, who were able to dress up their dolls in separate outfits.

After returning to the United States, Rose began designing dolls again with the help of engineer Jack Ryan, and named them Barbie after her daughter Barbara. Barbie was first introduced at the American International Toy Fair in New York on March 9, 1959, which became the official date of Barbie's birthday. The Bild Lilli doll was officially discontinued after Mattel acquired the rights to the doll in 1964. The first Barbie doll had a ponytail, wore a black and white zebra print swimsuit, and had both blonde and dark brown hair. Initially nicknamed "Young Fashion Model", Barbie's clothes were designed by Mattel fashion designer Charlotte Johnson. Barbie sold about three quarters of a million dolls in the first year after the launch.

Rose believed that Barbie's adult appearance was very important. Initial market research showed that some parents did not like the doll's visible breasts. Barbie's appearance has changed many times, most notably in 1971 when Barbie's eyes were adjusted to look forward, rather than sweeping to one side as they had initially done.

Barbie was one of the first to use television as a promotional toy, and this model was later widely used for other toys. According to statistics, Barbie is available in more than 150 countries and has sold more than one billion boxes, with Mattel claiming to sell three Barbie dolls every second.

The standard ratio of Barbie and its related products is approximately one to six, which is also referred to as playscale. Barbie's products*** are not limited to dolls and dolls' clothing, but also include Barbie-branded merchandise such as books, fashion and video games. Barbie has appeared in a series of animations and made a cameo appearance in the 1999 animation Toy Story 2.

Barbie is also unique in that she has become a cultural icon and has received a rare honor in the toy world: in 1974, a portion of New York's Times Square was named "Barbie Boulevard" for a week, and in 1985, postmodern artist Andy Warhol created a Barbie figure. The artist produced an image of Barbie in 1985.

The setting of Barbie

Barbie's full name is Barbara Millicent Roberts, and she has been given a number of companions over the years, most notably her hunky boyfriend, Ken (Ken Carson), who made his debut in 1961. , Ken also uses the name of Rose? Like Barbie, Ken used the name of Rose Handler's son. Barbie and Ken's on-again, off-again relationship is quite well known, and they announced their temporary separation in 2004. Other longtime friends in Barbie's social circle who are ethnically diverse include Hispanic Teresa, African-American Christie and Steven (Christie's boyfriend), and Kayla.

According to the Random House novels of the 1960s, Barbie's parents were George and Margaret Troilus, both of whom came from the same family. They were from a fictional town called Willows, Wisconsin, and Barbie attended Willows High School in Willows, Wisconsin, and Manhattan International High School in New York City, a fictionalized version of Stuyvesant High School.

Barbie's recorded pets had had Barbie had more than 43 pets, 21 dogs, 12 horses, 3 dwarf stallions, 6 cats, a parrot, a baby chimpanzee, a panda, a lion cub, a giraffe and a zebra. She owns a pink convertible, trailer, jeep...and other vehicles. Also has a pilot's license to operate commercial airliners when she's not serving in the cabin as a flight attendant. [

From doll to cultural icon

From the day the first Barbie was born, it has been continually improved and innovated. Barbie's appearance has been revised and improved some 500 times or more to become what it is today. The most recent appearance is based on the famous American Chinese athlete Michelle Kwan as a prototype. In order to make "Barbie" have beautiful fashion, from 1995 to the present about more than 1 billion pieces of clothing production out, every year about a hundred models of Barbie new clothes launched. Now "Barbie" is sold in 150 countries around the world, the total sales volume of more than 1 billion. This is between the little girl and adult women in the United States between the girl, is the world's toy market best-selling toys for the longest time, to become the world's men and women of young and old beloved things.

Now, Barbie is 50 years old, but she is still young, and she has lived longer than the once popular Cabbage Patch dolls and teddy bears. No one knows why this is, even her creator, Ruth? Handler couldn't explain it either. Longevity is something mysterious and elusive, both in the toy world and in real life. Ruth Handler was once asked. Handler: Why is Barbie doing so well? She just smiled and replied, "I'm a marketing genius." However, Mattel also produces many other types of toys, not only did none of them perform better than Barbie, but also aborted quite a few indeed. It should be said that Ruth's original inspiration to give the doll a permanent life, she is close to life, really for the children to create a "Barbie" of "Barbie's mother".

Barbie has gone far beyond the definition of a toy to become an immortal cultural symbol. She attracted the attention of pop guru Andy Warhol, who had a fascination with Barbie. Warhol's sight, his love for "Barbie", no less than his Marilyn Monroe? Monroe's fascination; in the late 90's a period of time, "Barbie" almost every day in the American radio, although singing "Barbie" is a Danish singing group; she is the representative of the 20th century life, is a symbol of American women, is the modern Mona Lisa. She is a symbol of 20th century life, a symbol of the American woman, a modern-day Mona Lisa, and even the academy, which prides itself on its seriousness, has had to condescend to the study of the "Barbie phenomenon". Students in sociology classes are asked to complete assignments such as: What criticisms have been leveled at Barbie for being a role model? Do you think these criticisms should be taken into account by manufacturers? Though there may never be a "right" answer to these questions.

Regardless of all the discussion and praise, one thing is certain: Barbie is the first woman in the doll design industry to be born alive, and no longer a passive child. "Barbie" adult design opens up the horizons of little girls, they can perceive the world outside the kindergarten through the "Barbie", and "Barbie" together to experience the adult life of the The Barbies are a great way to experience adult life with Barbie. From beach girls to politicians, Barbie's varied image inspires children's imaginations, and they want to be just like Barbie when they grow up.

Barbie's success brought Mattel a great deal of wealth, and by the time Ruth was 50 in 1966, Mattel ruled the competitive world of toys, controlling 12 percent of the $2 billion U.S. toy market. Ruth says, "By then I had my business, my husband, my kids and Barbie and Ken. I was on top of the world."

But life didn't go well for Ruth after that; in 1970, Ruth was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a mastectomy. At the same time, new Mattel executives began to diversify the company's product offerings away from toys, a policy that ultimately forced Ruth and her husband to move away from the business they had created, and in 1975, Ruth resigned as president and left the company she and her husband had founded.
