Plums are small deciduous trees with an open crown. The new shoots are smooth, usually green or reddish-brown. Leaves alternate, ovate, long acuminate at the apex, leaf-first flowering, flowers inserted in the leaf axils of annual branches, solitary, or in clusters of 2, more varied in color such as white, red, pink, etc., fragrant, monopetalous to double petal, sepals are obvious, often not reflexed after flowering, numerous stamens, filaments are longer, one or several pistils, the drupe is subglobose with longitudinal grooves, turning yellow when ripe, fragrant.
The plant is about 10m tall, with a brownish-purple stem and many longitudinal barbed lines. The branchlets are green. The leaf blade is broadly ovate to ovate, with serrulate margins.
