War and love are intertwined

Like the movie of the same name, the dance drama Red River Valley adopts a structure in which two threads, war and love, are intertwined. Although the war is not directly written in Acts I-IV, it is a good preparation for the outbreak of the war. The Englishman Rockman, who comes to Tibet as a scientific investigator, blasphemes the Tibetan gods, shoots down a big eagle flying over the sky, and beats up a mountain girl who comes to block his despicable behavior. All of this is intrinsically linked to the soaring clouds of war smoke in Act V.

The play also lays out a very clear line of love: the beautiful and cheerful headman's daughter Danzhu is passionately in love with the straight and tough Tibetan slave Gesang, while Gesang is in love with the innocent and kind-hearted Han Chinese girl Shanmei. The emotional entanglements of a man and two women, due to their different status and ethnic differences, roll up layers of waves in the development of the plot of the play.

The stage shows thousands of troops and horses

Act 5, "Bloodshed at Everest," is the main scene in the play that directly depicts the war. The headman in front of the city gate to block the Rockman invasion, the people of all ethnic groups and lamas rushed to the enemy line to fight against the British have fallen in the British gunfire; Danzhu, Shanmei and Gesang also faced with the mourning of the parting of life and death. The whole play with seven cannons in the music pool in the lift the clever use of lighting, sound effects and give full play to create a thousand troops and horses killed in the frontier bloody and fiery war scenes.
