In ancient times, many shallow and fast-flowing rivers could not be transited by boats but only by rafts, which the ancients believed was due to the weakness of the water and the inability to carry a boat, and therefore called such rivers weak water. Therefore, in ancient books such as the "Classic of Mountains and Seas", "Ten Continents" and so on, recorded a lot of not the same river but the same name of the weak water. Mountains and Seas in the north of Kunlun water can not win the force of mustard, so the name of the weak water is said to mean this. Some of the title passed down to the present is still in use, such as Gansu Province now on the map there is a weak water river. Weak water is also used to specifically refer to the northwestern Brahmaputra River or the Black Water River, but of course only in specific geographic writings.
Later in ancient literature, weak water was gradually used to refer to dangerous and distant rivers. One of the more famous is a line from Su Shi's Jinshan Miao Gao Tai: Penglai is inaccessible, and the weak water is 30,000 li. This is the first time that weak water is used in conjunction with a specific number. Zhang Xiaoxiang's Shui Long Yin - Looking at Jiuhua Mountain also contains the line 'The misty beads and buildings of Yugwei, looking at Penglai, no weak water at first'. In other poems, the line about weak water is rarely seen. On the contrary, it is more commonly used in later novels.
The twenty-second book of Journey to the West has a poem describing the dangers of the Liusha River when Tang Sanzang collects the sand monk: 800 Liusha boundary, 3,000 weak water depth, goose feather can't float down, the reed flower is set to the bottom of the sinking. This is the first formal reference to the three thousand weak waters. Mr. Lu Xun said in his "Supplement to Gleanings from Outer Collections. A Brief Introduction to Chinese Geology", he said, "Although the weak water is surrounded by four, isolated and alone, how will it... The Dream of the Red Chamber" is also mentioned in the twenty-fifth time: that Taoist and how it looks like: a foot high to a foot low, full of water and dragging mud. If we meet and ask where our home is, it is west of the weak waters of Penglai. The word "distant" is also used in this context.
