The Nightmare Before Christmas

The Nightmare Before Christmas

Directed by Henry Selick

Produced and scripted by Tim Burton

Produced by Touchstone

This animated puppet film tells a fairy tale with a horror movie twist. Skeleton Jack, the leader of Halloween City, is tired of going around making horrors every Halloween, and a chance encounter leads him into Christmas City. He enjoys the task of distributing gifts and bringing joy to people every Christmas, so he racks his brain to study Christmas and decides that Halloween City will take over this Christmas. Under Jack's leadership, the city, which is accustomed to horror and mischief, begins to produce "gifts" according to the rules of Christmas, builds a deer sled, and even kidnaps Santa Claus. The movie ends predictably, with Jack's excitement over the gifts he's sending causing a great deal of panic, and anti-aircraft guns placed everywhere shooting Jack down. Luckily, Jack makes it back to Halloween City in time for Santa to continue his Christmas mission.

Much of the movie's dialogue is sung in the form of Broadway operas, and the combination of a serious, slightly tongue-in-cheek singing style and somber, ludicrous imagery makes for a quirky and entertaining movie.
